Most nouns have distinctive plural forms. Noun plurals may be indicated by endings, by internal changes in the nouns, or by both. Not counting some exceptional instances, the noun plural endings are: "-e", "-er", "-(e)n", "-s", or no ending at all. Internal changes include the stem vowel changes a→ä, o→ö, u→ü, and au→äu. This kind of vowel change is known as "umlaut". Note that it cannot be applied to i or e.
