$LESSON 1-2: What They Do — and Don't Do
# Source: ST §We Eat Breakfast at the Snack Bar (table) + new talk-through (gap: table had no explanation)
$GRAMMAR I Eat, We Eat
ID: l1-s5
INTRO: In this part you'll learn to say what people do every day — and what they don't. Here's the first pattern: I, you, we, and they.
When you talk about things people do regularly — every day, every week — use the simple present. With **I**, **you**, **we**, and **they**, the verb stays in its plain form:
{I eat breakfast at the snack bar.}
{The students eat breakfast at the snack bar.}
| | | |
|---|---|---|
| I | eat | breakfast at the snack bar. |
| You | | |
| We | | |
| They | | |
| The students | | |
# Source: ST §We Eat Breakfast at the Snack Bar (drill)
$DIALOGUE We Eat Breakfast at the Snack Bar
ID: l1-s6
INTRO: Ten sentences with I, you, we, and they. Listen and repeat — the verb stays plain in every single one.
INSTRUCTION: Listen and repeat.
REPEAT
LINE: We eat lunch in the mess hall.
LINE: I go to class at 7:30.
LINE: The students write the answers in their books.
LINE: You put milk in your coffee.
LINE: I drink tea.
LINE: Aldo and Tom study in the library.
LINE: They watch TV in the barracks.
LINE: We buy pens and pencils in the BX.
LINE: Mr. and Mrs. Wilson get up at 6:30.
LINE: I get dressed at 6:45.
# Source: ST §We Eat in the Dining Hall Every Day
$DIALOGUE Every Day, Every Wednesday

INTRO: One little word — "every" — turns a sentence into a habit. Read these two.
INSTRUCTION: Read the sentences.
VOCAB: every
LINE: We eat in the dining hall every day. {st-page_015_001.jpg}
LINE: We go to the library every Wednesday. {st-page_015_002.jpg}
# Source: ST §Linda Eats Breakfast Every Day (table) + new talk-through (gap: table had no explanation)
$GRAMMAR He Eats, She Eats
ID: l1-s8
INTRO: Now the second pattern: with he, she, or one person's name, the verb takes an -s.
With **he**, **she**, or one person's name, add **-s** to the verb:
{Linda eats breakfast every day.}
{The boy eats breakfast every day.}
| | | |
|---|---|---|
| He | eats | breakfast every day. |
| She | | |
| Linda | | |
| The boy | | |
# Source: ST §Linda Eats Breakfast Every Day (drill)
$DIALOGUE Linda Eats Breakfast Every Day
ID: l1-s9
INTRO: Repeat these sentences, and listen for the -s at the end of every verb.
INSTRUCTION: Listen and repeat.
REPEAT
LINE: Tom takes a shower every day.
LINE: Mrs. Wilson puts sugar in her tea.
LINE: The girl swims every Saturday.
LINE: Mr. Rogers goes to bed at 11:30.
LINE: Mr. Jackson shaves every day.
LINE: His sister drinks coffee.

# Source: ST §He Drinks Coffee in the Mess Hall
$DIALOGUE I Drink, He Drinks
ID: l1-s10
INTRO: Read these pairs — plain verb, then verb with -s. Same routine, different subject.
INSTRUCTION: Read the sentences.
LINE: I drink coffee in the barracks.
LINE: He drinks coffee in the mess hall.
LINE: You go to the lab every Monday.
LINE: The student goes to the lab Tuesday.
LINE: They swim every weekend.
LINE: Aldo swims every Thursday.
LINE: We put sugar in our tea.
LINE: The teacher puts sugar in his coffee.
LINE: I eat breakfast at the snack bar.
LINE: She eats breakfast at the mess hall.
# Source: ST §Tom Doesn't Get Up at 5:00 (tables) + new talk-through (gap: tables had no explanation)
$GRAMMAR Don't and Doesn't
ID: l1-s11
INTRO: And now the negative: don't and doesn't. Pay attention to what happens to the -s.
To say what someone does NOT do, put **don't** or **doesn't** before the verb.
With **I**, **you**, **we**, and **they**, use {don't}:
| | | | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tom and Bob | do not | eat | at noon. |
| They | don't | | at midnight. |
**DO + NOT = DON'T**
With **he** or **she**, use {doesn't} — and the verb goes back to its plain form:
| | | |
|---|---|---|
| Tom (He) | | gets up at 6 o'clock. |
| Tom (He) | does not (doesn't) | get up at 5 o'clock. |
**DOES + NOT = DOESN'T**
{Tom gets up at 6 o'clock.} → {He doesn't get up at 5 o'clock.} — the -s moves to "does" and disappears from the verb.
