### AUDIO TRACK 5

(1) Hello! Open your book to the activities for Lesson 4B. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen and repeat the sentences. What's her occupation? (pause 4 sec) What's his job? (pause 4 sec) What kind of work does he do? (pause 4 sec) What does he do? (pause 4 sec)

(3) Now look at the pictures in Figure 1. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause for repetition)

Picture 1: dentist...dentist  
A dentist is a doctor. She works on People's teeth.

Picture 2: businesswoman...businesswoman  
company...company  
She's a businesswoman.  
Rita and her husband own an insurance company.

Picture 3: salesman...salesman  
He sells cars. He's a salesman.

Picture 4: cashier...cashier  
boss...boss  
Alice takes money from customers at a restaurant.  
She's a cashier. (pause)  
Mr. Jones owns the restaurant. He's her boss.

(4) Look at Figure 2. Listen to some sentences about people's occupations or jobs. Then answer the question. Write the number in front of the correct answer. (pause as marked; and for repetition)

Number 1: He works in a grocery store. The customers pay him for their food. What's his occupation?  
(pause 4 sec after each question) The answer is c, cashier. Put a 1 in front of cashier. (pause 3 sec)  
Repeat: The cashier takes the customers' money for food. (pause as marked; pause for repetition)

Number 2: Jack drives a truck for a furniture store. What's his job?  
(pause 6 sec) The correct answer is b. Repeat: He's a truck driver.

Number 3: Mary sells towels in a department store. What is her job?  
(pause 6 sec) The correct answer is d, saleswoman. Repeat: A saleswoman sells things.

Number 4: Mark owns a drugstore. What's his occupation?  
(pause 6 sec) The correct answer is a, businessman. Repeat: He's a businessman.

Number 5: Alice works for an insurance company. She types, writes letters, and answers the phone. What is she? (pause 6 sec) The correct answer is f, secretary. Repeat: A secretary usually types and answers the phone.

Number 6: He cleaned and filled my teeth. What's his occupation?  
(pause 6 sec) The correct answer is e, dentist.  
Repeat: A dentist cleans and fills teeth.

(5) Now look at the chart in Figure 3. This is a chart about the weather in different cities. Read all the information on the chart. (pause 15 sec) First, repeat the names of the cities two times. (pause for repetition)

(6) Now look at the example. Listen to the question and answer it. What was the temperature in Chicago? (pause 4 sec) Repeat: It was 34 degrees. Listen and answer. Was it cloudy or clear? (pause 3 sec) Repeat: <u>It was cloudy.</u> (pause) Use the chart and answer the questions. (pause as marked; pause for repetition)

(7) Now, look at Figure 4. Listen to the time and draw the hands on the clocks. (pause 6 sec after each sentence)

Number 1: It's 6:00.  
Number 2: It's 7:30.  
Number 3: It's 12:15.  
Number 4: It's 7:00.  
Number 5: It's 5:20.  
Number 6: It's 10:45.

(8) Now look at the clocks and the sentences and answer the questions.

Number 1: What time is it? (pause 6 sec)  
Repeat: It's 6:00. It's time to get up.

Number 2: Is it time to sleep? (pause 6 sec)  
Repeat: No. It's 7:30. It's time for class.

Number 3: What time is it? (pause 6 sec)  
Repeat: It's 12:15. It's time to eat.

Number 4: Is it time to relax? (pause 6 sec)  
Repeat: Yes. It's 7:00. It's your free time.

Number 5: Is it time for breakfast? (pause 6 sec)  
Repeat: No. It's 5:20. It's time to eat supper.

Number 6: What time is it? (pause 6 sec)  
Repeat: It's 10:45. It's time to go to sleep.

(11) Now change parts. You read Bruce's lines. You start. (pause 6 sec)

voice 2: Sure. Where can I meet you? (pause 3 sec)
voice 2: Good. See you then.

(12) Look at Figure 6. Listen to a paragraph two times. Then write the main idea of the paragraph in a complete sentence. Listen.

Why do people go to shopping centers? You might say, "They go to shop." Most people do go to malls for that, but some just go for fun. The stores want to sell their things. They put their most beautiful and interesting things in their windows. They try to get the customers into their stores. Many people just like to see these stores. Others like to walk or exercise in the malls. It's cool and safe there. Some people like to go and watch other people while they shop or walk. A shopping center can be fun to visit.

(13) Listen to the paragraph again.
