(1) Hello. Open your book to the activities for Lesson 3C. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Circle the number of the syllable with the strongest stress. You will hear each word twice. (pause 5 sec after each item)

(4) Now look at Figure 2. Listen to two conversations; then write the answer to the question about the message that was taken and delivered. Read the questions in Figure 2. (pause 10 sec) Now listen to the first dialog.

(3 voices: voices 2 and 3 are male)

(phone rings twice, then dialog begins)

voice 1: Hello.
voice 2: Hello. Major Parker, please.
voice 1: He's not here right now. May I take a message?
voice 2: Yes, this is Major Smith. Please tell him that I'll meet him at the Officers' Club at eleven hundred hours for lunch.
voice 1: Okay. I'll tell him.

(footsteps of man, sound of door opening)

voice 1: Major Parker, you had a call.
voice 3: Yes, who was it?
voice 1: It was Major Smith. He said to tell you that he'll meet you for lunch at eleven hundred hours at the Officers' Club.

(5) Now write a sentence that answers the question. (pause 15 sec) Check your answer. They'll eat lunch at the Officers' Club.

(6) Listen to the second dialog.

(3 voices: voices 2 and 3 are male)

(knock on door, then dialog begins)

voice 1: Hi, Bob.
voice 2: Is Jack home?
voice 1: No, he's not. He'll be back at five thirty.
voice 2: Will you tell him that I need to borrow his math book?
voice 1: Sure. I'll tell him to take it to your house this evening.
voice 1: Jack, Bob came by.
voice 3: Oh, really? What did he want?
voice 1: He said to tell you that he needs to borrow your math book.

(7) Now answer the question with a complete sentence. (pause 15 sec) Check your answer: He needs to borrow Jack's math book.

(8) Look at Figure 3. Listen to some sentences. Don't repeat, just listen.

There's a lot of wind today. It's a windy day.

This dessert is thick and smooth like cream. It's creamy.

She thinks she's my boss. She's bossy.

He had aches and pains in his body. He felt achy.

This candy has nuts in it. This candy is nutty.

They wanted something for their thirst. They were thirsty.

You look like you need some sleep. You look sleepy.

The phone is close to my hand. It's handy.

My gloves have dirt on them. They're dirty.

His smile is bright like the sun. It's a sunny smile.

(9) Listen to the sentences again and write the missing words. (pause 10 sec after each one)

Number 1: There's a lot of wind today. It's a windy day.

Number 4: He had aches and pains in his body. He felt achy.

(10) Now check your spelling.

Number 1 is windy, w-i-n-d-y. Repeat: It's a windy day.

Number 2 is creamy, c-r-e-a-m-y. Repeat: It's creamy.

Number 3 is bossy, b-o-s-s-y. Repeat: She's bossy.

Number 4 is achy, a-c-h-y. There is no letter "e" in achy. Repeat: He felt achy.

Number 5 is nutty, n-u-t-t-y. There are two "t's" in nutty. Repeat: This candy is nutty.

Number 6 is thirsty, t-h-i-r-s-t-y. Repeat: They were thirsty.

Number 7 is sleepy, s-l-e-e-p-y. Repeat: You look sleepy.

Number 8 is handy, h-a-n-d-y. Repeat: It's handy.

Number 9 is dirty, d-i-r-t-y. Repeat: They're dirty.

Number 10 is sunny, s-u-n-n-y. Repeat: It's a sunny smile.

(11) Listen and repeat some sentences. (pause for repetition)

Repeat: It's too cold.

Repeat: It's too hot.

Repeat: His shirt is too dirty.

Repeat: This jacket is too small.

Repeat: That box is too heavy.

Repeat: Those pants are too big.

Repeat: My hands were too greasy.

**AUDIO TRACK 4**

(12) Now look at Figure 4. Look at the pictures and listen to the sentences. Write a sentence like the example.

Look at picture A and listen to a sentence twice.

The children can't go outside.
The children can't go outside.

The sentence that follows is "It's too cold." The children can't go outside because it's too cold. Now listen to a sentence; then write another sentence. Use the word <u>too</u> in your sentence. (pause 20 sec between items)

Picture B: I can't buy this suit.
I can't buy this suit. (pause 20 sec)

Picture C: Jim, don't drink that coffee
Jim, don't drink that coffee. (pause 20 sec)

Picture D: Fred, don't buy that shirt.
Fred, don't buy that shirt. (pause 20 sec)

Picture E: We can't go to the movies now.
We can't go to the movies now. (pause 20 sec)

Picture F: Janet, don't try to move that table.
Janet, don't try to move that table. (pause 20 sec)
