(1) Hello.
(2) Open your books to the activities for Lesson 2D. (pause 6 sec)
(3) Repeat the following words and sentences. Then answer the questions. (pause 20 sec after each question)

(4) Listen to a dialog.
(two voices, both male)
**voice 1:** Well, Don, Friday is our last day.
**voice 2:** Yeah, Jack, it is. What are you going to do now that school is out?
**voice 1:** I've been accepted at the University. I'll start there in September.
**voice 2:** What courses will you take?
**voice 1:** I have chosen business as my career field, so I'll take the courses they offer for that field.
**voice 2:** It sounds like you have a good future ahead of you.

(5) Look at Figure 1. Each of those sentences is part of the dialog. Listen to a sentence; then say yours. Ready? (pause 10 sec after each line)
script voice: Well, Don, Friday is our last day.
script voice: I've been accepted at the University. I'll start there in September.
script voice: I have chosen business as my career field, so I'll take the courses they offer for that field.

(6) Now look at Figure 2. You begin with the first line. Go ahead and start.
script voice: Yeah, Jack, it is. What are you going to do now that school is out?
script voice: What courses will you take?
script voice: It sounds like you have a good future ahead of you.
(7) Listen to the next dialog.
(voice one, male; voice two, female)
voice 1: Mom, I got a job offer from the phone company today.
voice 2: Is it a good offer?
voice 1: I think so. It pays seventy-five dollars more a month than the job I have now. And they will pay for any college courses that help me with the job.
voice 2: It sounds good.
voice 1: Well, I'll think it over. They don't need an answer until Wednesday.
voice 2: Just remember, I'm here if you want to discuss it.
voice 1: Thanks, Mom.

(8) Look at Figure 3. Someone will read the first line. Say your line after that. (pause 10 sec after each line)

(9) Look at Figure 4. You begin this time.

(10) Listen to this dialog. It's the last one.
(two voices, both male)
voice 1: Hey, Tony, you really need a new car.
voice 2: I know, Glen. Last night when the mechanic told me that I needed six hundred dollars to fix it, I decided to buy a new car.
voice 1: What kind are you going to buy?
voice 2: I've decided to buy an American car. They're easier for mechanics to repair.
voice 1: Bring it to my house when you get it. I want a ride in it.
voice 2: Okay, Glen. See you in about two weeks.

(11) Now, look at Figure 5. Someone will read a line first. Say your lines next. (pause 10 sec after each line)
script voice: Hey, Tony, you really need a new car.
script voice: What kind are you going to buy?
script voice: Bring it to my house when you get it. I want a ride in it.

(12) Look at Figure 6. You begin.

(13) Look at Figure 7. Read the paragraph. (pause 20 sec) Listen to the questions. Underline the answer and write the number of the question under the answer. Look at the example. Listen to the question. Underline the answer; then write the number of the question under the answer. (pause 10 sec after each question)
Number 1: Where did Julie go?
Number 2: What did her family need?
Number 3: What did she buy for her daughter?
Number 4: What did she buy for her son?
Number 5: What did she buy for her husband?
(14) Let's check your answers. Number 1 goes under "shopping"; "shopping" is underlined.
Number 2 goes under "clothes"; "clothes" is underlined.
Number 3 goes under "a blouse and skirt"; "a blouse and skirt" is underlined.
Number 4 goes under "two pairs of jeans"; "two pairs of jeans" is underlined.
Number 5 goes under "three shirts and five pairs of socks"; "three shirts and five pairs of socks" is underlined.
(15) Let's begin. Read the paragraph and be ready to answer the questions. (pause 20 sec)
(16) Now listen to the questions. Underline and number the answers. You will hear each question twice.
Number 1: Where will Carl go next fall?

(17) Let's check your answers. Number 1, "Where will Carl go next fall?", you should have "a university" underlined.
Number 2, "What has he chosen as his profession?", you should have "teaching" underlined.
Number 3, "What courses will he take?", you should have "English, math, and education" underlined.
(18) Now read the second paragraph. (pause 20 sec)
(19) Underline and number the answers to the questions.

Number 3: How many classes of English does she have?

(20) Now let's check your answers. Number 1, "What is Patty's profession?" You should have "teacher" underlined.
Number 2, "What are her two teaching fields?" You should have "English and German" underlined.
Number 3, "How many classes of English does she have?" You should have "four" underlined.
And, Number 4, "How many classes of German does she have?" You should have "two" underlined.

(21) Look at Figure 8. Listen to a short dialog. Select the letter that best describes the meaning of the conversation. The first one is an example.
(two voices, both female)
voice 1: Did you hear that noise, Betty?
voice 2: Yes, I did. Let's call our neighbor and ask him to look in our yard.
They are .... (pause 5 sec)
(22) The answer is: They are frightened. Now listen to the other dialogs, and choose the correct answer.
Number 1:
(two voices, both male)
voice 1: Sgt Matthews, it's 12:45, and I haven't had lunch yet.
voice 2: Don't worry, Sgt Adams, I'll wait here until you come back.
Sgt Adams is .... (pause 10 sec)
Number 2:
(voice 1 female; voice 2, male)
voice 1: Mark, wake up. It's after seven. Your bus will be here in thirty minutes.
voice 2: Mom, my stomach hurts. I want to stay home today.
Mark is .... (pause 10 sec)
Number 3:
(two voices, both female)
voice 1: Carla, I've been accepted at the university!
voice 2: That's great, Lori!
Lori is .... (pause 10 sec)
Number 4:
(two voices, both male)
voice 1: Pvt Walters, I told you to clean this floor.
voice 2: I'm sorry, Sgt Allen, I thought you said to clean this door.
Sgt Allen is .... (pause 10 sec)
Number 5:
(two voices, both male)
voice 1: Hey, Jack, your yard really looks nice.
voice 2: Thanks. It took me all day to do it. It was a lot of work.
Jack is .... (pause 10 sec)
(23) Let's check your answers.
Number 1 is B: Sgt Adams is hungry. Repeat: Sgt Adams is hungry.
Number 2 is C: Mark is sick. Repeat: Mark is sick.
Number 3 is A: Lori is happy. Repeat: Lori is happy.
Number 4 is C: Sgt Allen is angry. Repeat: Sgt Allen is angry.
Number 5 is B: Jack is tired. Repeat: Jack is tired.

(24) Now look at Figure 9. You will hear a paragraph. Listen carefully; then write the main idea. You will hear the paragraph twice.
Learning a language is not easy. It takes a lot of time and lots of hard work. You must practice speaking, reading, and writing the new language as often as you can. You must learn to think in that language, and not in your own. If you study every day, you'll be speaking this new language very soon.
(25) Listen to the paragraph again.
