Lesson 2A
AUDIO TRACK 1
(1) Hello. Open your book to the activities for Lesson 2A. (pause 6 sec)
(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen to a paragraph. First, circle the letter of the topic of the paragraph. Then circle the letter of the main idea. Listen. (read paragraphs at normal speed)
Number 1:
Jan was hungry. She wanted a candy bar. She finally found a vending machine. It took her money, but it didn't give her any candy or her money back. She shook the machine. She was angry. She didn't have any more change. It always happens. Machines don't always work when you need them.
(3) Select the topic. (pause 5 sec) The answer is a. The topic of the paragraph is: vending machines. Now select the main idea. (pause 5 sec) The answer is b. The main idea is: Machines don't always work.
Number 2:
When you lend a friend money, you sometimes hurt your friendship. When a friend asks to borrow some money, you should tell him you can't lend it to him. That's my advice. Why? Because you won't feel good around him until he gives you back the money. It may be difficult, but it's better not to lend money to a friend.
(4) Select the topic. (pause 5 sec) The answer is c. The topic of the paragraph is: money and friendship. Now select the main idea. (pause 5 sec) The answer is a. The main idea is: Don't lend money to friends.
Number 3:
Nell works in a bank. She opens and closes accounts for people every day. She gives them the checkbooks for their checking accounts. She cashes checks, takes deposits, and helps people make deposits to or withdrawals from their savings accounts. Bank work isn't easy, but Nell likes it very much.
(5) Select the topic in number 3. (pause 5 sec) The answer is b. The topic is: Nell's work. Now select the main idea. (pause 5 sec) The answer is c. The main idea is: Nell likes to work in the bank.

(6) Go to Figure 2. Look at the example. Listen and repeat the word: cafeteria (pause) Listen to the sentence and repeat it. Then repeat the word and underline it when you hear it. Now repeat: Ruth ate lunch in the cafeteria. (pause) Repeat and underline: cafeteria (pause)

(9) Now look at Figure 4. Listen to the words and circle the number of the strong syllable. The strong syllable is called a stressed syllable. Listen to the example: a POL o gize, a POL o gize. The second syllable is stressed. Circle the number 2.

(12) Go to Figure 5. Now listen to a dialog. (2 voices: voice 1, male; voice 2, female)

(14) Look at Figure 6. Listen to a paragraph. First write the topic. Then write the main idea of the paragraph in a complete sentence. Listen. (read at normal speed)
Paragraph 1: Apartment managers have a difficult job. They make appointments, show the people the empty apartments and take deposits on the rent. They also have to talk to people when things in the apartments break or don't work. Many times they have to work longer than eight hours a day. It's not an easy job.
(15) Write the topic. (pause 10 sec) The topic is: apartment managers. Now write the main idea. (pause 20 sec) The main idea is: Apartment managers have difficult jobs.
(16) Listen to the second paragraph. Jane likes animals. She has two dogs, a cat and a bird. She keeps her cat and bird in the house. She has a yard with a fence and her dogs stay outside in the yard. She is good to her animals and she likes to play with them.
(17) Write the topic. (pause 10 sec) The topic is: Jane's animals. Now write the main idea. (pause 20 sec) The main idea is: Jane likes animals.
(18) You may write the topic and main idea in different words but the ideas should be the same. Discuss your topic and main ideas with your teacher after lab.
