Figure 1

Listen to a story. Repeat the word and the sentence. Underline the word as you say it.

Example: (supper) Another name for dinner is supper.

  1. Joan went to the shopping center with her mother. #1 Joan walking with her mother at a busy shopping center near a dress shop

  2. Her mother went up the stairs to the second floor. #2 Joan's mother riding an escalator up to the second floor while Joan stays at the bottom

  3. Joan didn't see her mother leave; she was alone.

(1) Hello. Open your book to the activities for Lesson 2B. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at the pictures in Figure 1. Listen to a story.

Joan went to the shopping center with her mother. Her mother went up the stairs to the second floor. Joan didn't see her mother leave; she was alone. When she realized that, she was afraid and she cried. Everybody tried to help her. Joan's mother came back down on the escalator. Everyone was glad to see her. When Joan saw her mother, she was ready to go home. The mother politely thanked everyone for their help. Joan decided to watch her mother more carefully next time. After supper, she told her neighbor about her day in the mall.

(3) Now look at the example in Figure 1. Listen and repeat the word and sentence. Repeat: supper (pause for repetition) Another name for dinner is supper. (pause for repetition) Now underline the word while you say it. supper (pause for repetition)

(4) Now listen, repeat, and underline. (pause for repetition; pause 3 sec after the last word)

(7) Now look at Figure 3. First listen to a word. Then write and say the letters while they are spelled. Then listen and repeat the sentence. (pause 4 sec after each item)

Number 1: shopping center, s-h-o-p-p-i-n-g, shopping; c-e-n-t-e-r, center Repeat: There are many different stores in a shopping center.

Number 2: upstairs, u-p-s-t-a-i-r-s, upstairs Repeat: An escalator will take you upstairs.

(8) Look at the example in Figure 4. Listen to the two sentences. Sam was glad. He has a new car. Now repeat the new sentence. Sam was glad to have a new car. (pause) Now listen to a sentence. Read the sentence in your book and make a new sentence. (pause as marked and for repetition of new sentence)

Number 1: Fran is pleased. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Fran is pleased to have a new coat.

Number 2: Roger is sorry. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Roger is sorry to leave Texas.

Number 3: Jane is afraid. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Jane is afraid to go to the doctor's.

Number 4: Lil was happy. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Lil was happy to get the message.

Number 5: Max was surprised. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Max was surprised to find his ID under the bed.

(9) Now look at the example in Figure 5. Listen to the question. Use the words and answer the question. Listen: Is he happy? (pause) Repeat: Yes, he's happy to go home tomorrow.

Listen. Then answer the question. (pause for student to answer the question; pause for repetition)

Number 1: Was Jane afraid? Repeat: Yes, she was afraid to lose her wallet.

Number 2: What was he scared to do? Repeat: He was scared to cross the highway.

Number 3: Were they happy? Repeat: No, they weren't happy to move out of town.

Number 4: Is it dangerous here? Repeat: Yes, it's dangerous to swim here.

Number 5: Is John glad? Repeat: No, he's not glad to change jobs.

(10) Now look at the example in Figure 6. Use the words and ask a question. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Are you ready to eat?

Number 1: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Are you ready to go?

Number 2: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Is he sad to leave?

Number 3: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Is it safe to play here?

Number 4: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Are you afraid to swim?

Number 5: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Are they ready to eat?

(11) Go to Figure 7. This is a dictation exercise. Listen to a paragraph first. (read at normal speed)

Do you know how to open an account at a bank? First select a bank near your home or office. Then go to the bank and speak to the bank clerk. It's best to take your ID with you. The bank clerk will ask for your name and address. He'll also ask about your job. It's good to have a savings account and a checking account. Open both of them.

(12) Now listen again and write the group of words you hear. (pause 10 - 20 sec after each segment.)
