(1) Hello. Open your book to the activities for Lesson 2C. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen to a dialog. Then answer the questions. Listen.

(2 voices: female)

voice 1: Let's go shopping, Mary. I need some new clothes. voice 2: Okay, Peg. There's a nice dress shop in the mall. voice 1: There is a good shoe store there, too. voice 2: I'll help you shop. I don't need any clothes, but I do want to get some things at the department store. voice 1: This will be fun. Let's go!

(3) Now answer the questions. Circle a, b, or c. (pause 5 sec after each question)

Number 1: What does Peg need?

Number 2: Where are they going?

Number 3: Where does Mary want to go?

(4) Let's check your answers.

Number 1 is c. Peg needs some new clothes.

Number 2 is a. They are going to the mall.

Number 3 is c. Mary wants to go to the department store.

(5) Look at Figure 2. Listen to the dialog and then select the answers to the questions. (2 voices: male)

voice 1: Br-r-r. It's cold! voice 2: It sure is, but it's colder in the north. They had ice on their roads this morning. voice 1: What was the temperature up north? voice 2: It was 10 degrees. voice 1: That's very cold. I guess I shouldn't say 36 degrees is cold.

(6) Now answer the questions. (pause 5 sec after each question)

Number 1: Where did they have ice on the roads?

Number 2: What was the temperature in the north?

Number 3: What is the temperature here?

(7) Let's check your answers.

Number 1 is a. They had ice on the roads in the north.

Number 2 is c. The temperature in the north was 10 degrees.

Number 3 is b. The temperature here is 36 degrees.

(8) Now look at Figure 3. Listen. Then answer the questions. (2 voices: voice 1, female; voice 2, male)

voice 1: Are you going to take a vacation this summer, Art? voice 2: Yes, but I haven't decided on the place. voice 1: I thought you were going to drive to the mountains. voice 2: I'd like to. I want to go there because I like to take long walks in the mountains, but my family wants to go to the ocean. They like to swim. voice 1: Maybe you can go to a lake. They can swim and you can walk.

(9) Answer the questions. (pause 5 sec after each question)

Number 1: Where does Art want to go?

Number 2: What does his family like to do?

Number 3: Where did his friend say they should go?

(10) Let's check your work.

Number 1 is c. Art wants to go to the mountains.

Number 2 is b. His family likes to swim.

Number 3 is a. His friend said they should go to a lake.

(11) Look at the box in Figure 4. Listen and repeat.

John leaves tomorrow.

John will leave tomorrow.

John is going to leave tomorrow.

John is leaving tomorrow.

(12) All these sentences mean the same thing. Now listen and repeat the sentences. Look at the changes. (pause for repetition)

Number 1: Repeat: The Smiths shop next week for their trip. /
The Smiths will shop next week for their trip.

Number 2: Repeat: They leave next month on their vacation. /
They are going to leave next month on their vacation.

Number 3: Repeat: They pack their suitcases tomorrow. /
They are packing their suitcases tomorrow.

(13) Now look at the picture in Figure 5. Listen to a story about the Smiths and the trip they are going to take.

The Smiths are on vacation all of next month. Their plane arrives in London tomorrow morning. The next week they fly to Rome. They spend a week there. Then they go on to Cairo. They sightsee in Cairo for a week. After that they fly home. Then Jim and Jan Smith return to work, and the children go back to school.

(14) Look at the example in Figure 5. Listen. The Smiths will be on vacation all of next month. Change the words "will be" to "are." Write the word "are" in the first blank. (pause 4 sec) Now listen to the story. Change the words and complete the sentences. (pause 5 sec after each sentence)

Their plane will arrive in London tomorrow morning.

The next week they will fly to Rome.

They will spend a week there.

Then they will go on to Cairo.

They will sightsee in Cairo for a week.

After that they will fly home.

Then Jim and Jan Smith will return to work, and the children will go back to school.

(15) Now let's check your answers. Repeat the right sentences.
(pause for repetition)

Repeat: The Smiths are on vacation all of next month.

Repeat: Their plane arrives in London tomorrow morning.

Repeat: The next week they fly to Rome.

Repeat: They spend a week there.

Repeat: Then they go on to Cairo.

Repeat: They sightsee in Cairo for a week.

Repeat: After that they fly home.

(16) Now look at Figure 6. Listen to an introduction. Listen to the things people say when they meet for the first time.

voice 2: How do you do, Jack?

(17) Now look at Figure 7. Repeat these sentences. (pause for repetition)

(18) Now look at the example in Figure 8. Listen to a word and complete the sentence. Don't write it; just say the complete sentence.

(20) Look at Figure 9. There are 3 main rules for introductions:

First: Always introduce men to women.

Second: Always introduce younger people to older people.

And third: Always introduce people of lower rank to people of higher rank.

Look at the example in Figure 9. Look at the rules and make an introduction. Listen. Mrs. Hall and Mr. Win. (pause) I'd like you to meet my friend. Mrs. Hall, this is Mr. Win. (pause 6 sec) Repeat: I'd like you to meet my friend. Mrs. Hall, this is Mr. Win. (pause for repetition)

(21) Now listen carefully. Look at the rules and make an introduction.

Number 1: Lt Ali and Col James (pause 6 sec)
Repeat: I'd like you to meet my friend. Col James, this is Lt Ali.

Number 2: Mary Wilson and John Hill (pause 6 sec)
Repeat: I'd like you to meet my friend. Mary Wilson, this is John Hill.

Number 3: Capt Black and Sgt Green (pause 6 sec)
Repeat: I'd like you to meet my friend. Capt Black, this is Sgt Green.

Number 4: Jack Brown and Jane Smith (pause 6 sec)
Repeat: I'd like you to meet my friend. Jane Smith, this is Jack Brown.

Number 5: Pvt White and Sgt Gray (pause 6 sec)

(26) Now go to Figure 11. Ask and answer questions with the words "someone" and "anyone." Let's do the example. Repeat the question: Did you hit someone with the ball? Listen: No. Repeat the answer: No, I didn't hit anyone.

Number 1: Ask the question. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Did you see anyone at the party?

Listen: No. (pause 4 sec) Repeat the answer: No, I didn't see anyone.
