(1) Hello again. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 1D. (pause 6 sec)
(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen to three sentences and repeat them. Then change them to one sentence. Let's do the example first.
The boy was little. He packed a suitcase. The suitcase was small.
Repeat: The boy was little. (pause) He packed a suitcase. (pause) The suitcase was small. (pause)
Now make one sentence. (pause 6 sec) The little boy packed a small suitcase. Repeat: The little boy packed a small suitcase. (pause) Let's start the exercise. (pause 6 sec after each set of three sentences)
Number 1: The man is tall. He has a wife. She is short. Repeat: The man is tall. He has a wife. She is short. Make a new sentence now. (pause 6 sec) The tall man has a short wife. Repeat: The tall man has a short wife.
Number 2: The students were hungry. They ate a meal. The meal was big. Repeat: The students were hungry. They ate a meal. The meal was big. Now make a new sentence. (pause 6 sec) The hungry students ate a big meal. Repeat: The hungry students ate a big meal.

(3) Look at Figure 2 now. Listen to a paragraph. Don't repeat it. Then look at the underlined word and answer a question. (pause 4 sec after each question)
Number 1: Charles and Linda drew four shapes on the chalkboard. The shapes were alike. They were round. The four shapes were circles.
Now look at the underlined word. What word is the same as they, shapes or Linda and Charles? (slight pause) The answer is shapes. Repeat: The shapes were round.
Number 2: Jack took a vacation in Florida last month. His brother is in the Navy there. He stayed for two weeks and went sightseeing every day.
Look at the word he. What is the same as he, Jack or his brother? (pause) The answer is Jack. Repeat: Jack stayed for two weeks and went sightseeing every day.
Number 3: Martha and Jane work in a big store downtown every day after school. Their customers are always happy. They think the two girls are good clerks.
Is they Martha and Jane? No, it isn't. They is the same as "their customers." Repeat: Their customers think the two girls are good clerks.

Who is she? The answer is Sally. Repeat: Sally does her homework every night and makes good grades on the math tests.

Number 4 is a, "He drew it." Listen: John made a picture on the chalkboard.
Number 5 is c, "They are alike." Listen: "Large" and "big" are the same.
Number 6 is d, "It's a mistake." Listen: This number is wrong.
Number 7 is b, "It's called an apple." Listen to the question again: What's this fruit called?
Number 8 is d, "She's a teacher." Listen: What is Mary's job?
Number 9 is c, "Both boys are going." Listen: Ken is going to a movie. Al is going too.
Number 10 is a, "Yes, it's slow." Listen: You're late. Is something wrong with your watch?

(12) Now look at Figure 7. Listen to a paragraph. Select the information that is not in the paragraph and circle a, b, c, or d. Let's read the sentences in Figure 8 first.

The restaurant was very crowded, and the waiter was slow. He didn't come to their table or bring them menus for fifteen minutes. The girls didn't want to be late to the show. They left the restaurant and ate lunch at a snack bar near the movie.
(13) Circle your answer. (pause 15 sec) Now, listen to the paragraph again and check your answer.
