  3. roof A roof is the top of a building. It rains on the roofs of houses.

  6. flower grass There are flowers and grass in the yard.

  7. front This is the front yard of the house. The front door of the house is closed.

  8. back Back is the opposite of front. The backyard is on the other side of the house.

AUDIO TRACK 1

(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 3A. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Look at the pictures and listen to the words. Don't repeat.

(3) Now look at Figure 2. Listen to the words and sentences and repeat them. Listen and repeat. (pause for repetition)

Number 1: leaf...leaf A leaf is green in the summer.

Number 2: leaves...leaves In the fall, leaves change color.

Number 3: roof...roof A roof is the top of a building. It rains on the roofs of houses.

Number 4: garage...garage The car is in the garage. The garage door is closed.

Number 5: yard...yard There is a tree in the yard.

Number 6: flower...flower grass...grass There are flowers and grass in the yard.

Number 7: front...front This is the front yard of the house. The front door of the house is closed.

(4) Now look at Figure 3. Look at the picture. Listen to the questions and answer them. (pause 4 sec after each question; pause for repetition)

Number 1: Is it summer in the picture? Repeat: No, it isn't.

Number 2: What season is it? Repeat: It's winter.

Number 3: Do the trees have leaves? Repeat: No, they don't. These trees don't have leaves in the winter.

Number 4: What's on the roof of the house? Repeat: Snow. There's snow on the roof of the house.

Number 5: Can you see any grass or flowers in the picture? Repeat: No, they're under the snow.

Number 6: Is grass green in the winter? Repeat: No, it's brown. Grass is green in the summer and brown in the winter.

Number 7: Where are the boys playing? Repeat: In the front yard. The boys are playing in the front yard.

Number 8: Can you see the backyard? Repeat: No, it's on the opposite side of the house. The backyard is on the opposite side of the house.

Number 9: Can you see the family's car? Repeat: No, the car's in the garage.

Number 10: What's that shape near the right side of the house? It's wearing a hat and looks like a man. Repeat: It's called a snowman.

(5) Now look at Figure 4. Listen to the dialog. Don't repeat it. Just listen.

voice 1: Do you have any children? voice 2: Yes. I have a son and a daughter.

(6) Listen to the dialog again and repeat it. Listen and repeat both parts.

(7) Now look at the dialog again. I'll read the questions and you read the answers. (pause for student to give the answers from the dialogue above)

(8) This time you read Mary's part. Read only the questions. I'll read the answers. Begin. (pause for student to ask the questions from the dialogue above)

voice 2: Yes. I have a son and a daughter. voice 2: He's fifteen years old. voice 2: She's twelve. voice 2: It's twenty years old. voice 2: They're more than two hundred years old.

(9) Please close your books now. Listen to some questions and answers. Don't repeat; just listen.

(12) Now look at Figure 6. Listen to a paragraph. Circle the letter by the questions you can answer with the information in the paragraph. You may circle more than one letter. Look at Figure 6 and listen to the questions.

Now listen to the paragraph and circle what you hear.

Children in the United States go to school for twelve years. They study in the fall, winter, and spring, but not in the summer. They learn English, mathematics, and other things. Some of them study other languages. Many students learn Spanish or French. A few students learn Russian or Chinese. (pause 5 sec)

(15) Look at Figure 7. This is like Figure 6. Listen to a paragraph and circle the letter next to the information which you can answer with the paragraph. Listen to the questions.

Now listen to the paragraph and circle what you hear.

The first airplane flight in the United States was near the Atlantic Ocean on December 17, 1903. Two brothers took several flights in their small airplane that day. The younger brother flew first. He flew for twelve seconds. Later, the older brother flew for fifty-nine seconds. (pause 5 sec)
