David: When will we see all of it?
Diane: In two weeks. Next week we'll see half of it.


Barb: How many countries are there on earth?
Ben: There are one hundred and seventy-one.

Barb: Where did you learn that?
Ben: I looked at the world map and counted them.

Barb: Did you visit many of them?
Ben: No, not many.

Barb: I thought you were in the Navy.
Ben: I was, and I traveled around the world.

Barb: But you didn't see land?
Ben: That's right. I only saw a lot of water.

(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 3C. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen to the words; then repeat them. (pause for repetition)

(3) Go to Figure 2. Look at the pictures. Repeat the sentences. (pause for repetition)

Number 1: The airplane is above the trees.

Number 2: The airplane is below the clouds.

Number 4: The sun is low in the sky.

Number 5: The ball is going over the fence.

Number 6: The river starts in the mountains / and goes to the ocean.

Number 7: One hill is higher than the other two hills.

(4) Now look at the pictures again. Listen to questions and circle yes or no. (pause 4 sec after each question)

Number 1: Is the airplane higher than the trees?

Number 2: Are the clouds above the airplane?

(5) Listen and check your answers.

Number 1 is yes. Repeat: The airplane is higher than the trees.

Number 2 is yes. Repeat: The clouds are above the airplane.

Number 3 is no. The sun is high in this picture, not low. Repeat: The sun is high.

Number 4 is no. The mountains are below the sun, not over it. Repeat: The sun is over the mountains.

Number 5 is yes. Repeat: The fence is below the ball.

Number 6 is no. The water in a river is fast. The water in a lake doesn't go to an ocean. Repeat: The river isn't like a lake.

Number 7 is no. Hills are lower. Repeat: Hills are lower than mountains.

(6) Look at Figure 3. Listen to the first question: Why can't Lt Smith fly today? Now listen to the conversation and then answer the question. (2 male voices)

voice 1: Don, Lieutenant Smith can't fly today. voice 2: No problem, sir. I can fly with his student. voice 1: That's good. Thanks. voice 2: What's wrong with him? voice 1: He's sick. He called me at home last night.

(7) Now answer the question. Why can't Lieutenant Smith fly today? (pause 4 sec) Because he's sick. Lieutenant Smith is sick and can't fly today.


(8) Listen to the conversation again.

voice 1: Don, Lieutenant Smith can't fly today.
voice 2: No problem, sir. I can fly with his student.

voice 1: That's good. Thanks.
voice 2: What's wrong with him?

voice 1: He's sick. He called me at home last night.

(9) Look at the second question: When does the sergeant have to check I.D. cards? Now listen to the conversation and answer the question.

voice 1: May I please see your I.D. card, sir?
voice 2: Yes. Here it is. What's wrong, Sergeant?

voice 1: Nothing, sir. We have to check I.D.'s at this gate.
voice 2: Twenty-four hours a day?

voice 1: No, sir. Only after six o'clock at night.

(10) Now answer the question. When does the sergeant have to check I.D. cards? (pause 5 sec) Only after six o'clock at night. The sergeant has to check I.D. cards after six o'clock at night.

(11) Listen to the conversation again.

voice 1: May I please see your I.D. card, sir?
voice 2: Yes. Here it is. What's wrong, Sergeant?

voice 1: Nothing, sir. We have to check I.D.'s at this gate.
voice 2: Twenty-four hours a day?

voice 1: No, sir. Only after six o'clock at night.
