LESSON 4A

Figure 1

Repeat the words and sentences.

First, just listen to the paragraph. Then repeat it.

Nancy and Norm's new house has a lot of nice things in it. It has ceiling fans, carpets, and drapes in all the rooms. There is a nice bookcase with shelves from the floor to the ceiling in the living room. They will get new furniture for that room.

(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 4A. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Look at the pictures. Repeat the words and sentences.

(3) Look at Figure 2. Look at the pictures. Listen to each sentence and then select the correct picture. Write the letter of the picture in the blank. Listen to the example.

Number 1: This is the living room. (pause 5 sec)
Write i next to number 1. Look at picture i. This is the living room.

(4) Listen and write the letter of the picture. (pause 5 sec after each item)

Number 2: The drapes are on the window.

Number 3: Let's move the bookcase next to the window.

Number 4: I must clean the carpet before Saturday.

Number 5: Look up at the ceiling.

Number 6: Please put the books on the bottom shelf.

Number 7: She needs to clean the floor.

(5) Now look at Figure 2 again and check your answers.

Number 1 is i. Repeat: This is the living room.

(6) Now look at Figure 3. Listen to the paragraph. (read at normal speed)

Nancy and Norm's new house has a lot of nice things in it. It has ceiling fans, carpets, and drapes in all the rooms. There is a nice bookcase with shelves from the floor to the ceiling in the living room. They will get new furniture for that room.

(7) Listen to the paragraph again and repeat. (pause at slashes for repetition)

Nancy and Norm's new house / has a lot of nice things in it. / It has ceiling fans, / carpets, / and drapes in all the rooms. / There is a nice bookcase / with shelves from the floor to the ceiling / in the living room. / They will get new furniture for that room.

(8) Now answer these questions. (pause 8 sec after each question; pause for repetition)

Number 1: What does the house have in all the rooms? Repeat: The house has ceiling fans, / carpets / and drapes in all the rooms.

Number 2: What does it have in the living room? Repeat: It has a nice bookcase with shelves from the floor to the ceiling.

Number 3: What will Nancy and Norm get? Repeat: They will get new furniture for the living room.

(9) Look at Figure 4. Listen to the sentences and circle the word with the strong stress. Look at the example and listen. This is the LIVING room. This is the LIVING room. LIVING is the word with the strong stress. Circle LIVING.

(10) Now listen to the sentence and circle the correct word. (pause 4 sec after the second reading of each sentence)

Number 1: I want some new DRAPES. I want some new DRAPES.

Number 2: Put it on the SHELF. Put it on the SHELF.

Number 3: This is a BOOKCASE. This is a BOOKCASE.

Number 4: That's a TABLE. That's a TABLE.

(12) Now look at Figure 5. Listen to a paragraph and select the information you do not hear. Circle a, b, c, or d. Choose what is not in the paragraph. First listen to the sentences in Figure 5.

a. We divide a day into two halves. b. There are seven days in a week. c. There are twenty-four hours in a day. d. The sun is high in the sky at noon.

Now listen to the paragraph. (read at normal speed)

There are twenty-four hours in a day, sixty minutes in an hour, and sixty seconds in a minute. A day begins at midnight and ends twenty-four hours later, at midnight the next day. We divide a day into two halves of 12 hours each. We call the first half a.m. (from midnight to 12 noon). We call the second half p.m. (from noon to midnight).


(13) Now select the information you did not hear. Circle a, b, c, or d in Figure 5. (pause 15 sec)

(14) Listen to the paragraph again and check your answers. (read at normal speed)

There are twenty-four hours in a day, sixty minutes in an hour, and sixty seconds in a minute. A day begins at midnight and ends twenty-four hours later, at midnight the next day. We divide a day into two halves of 12 hours each. We call the first half a.m. (from midnight to 12 noon). We call the second half p.m. (from noon to midnight).

(15) The answers are letters b and d. "There are seven days in a week" was not in the paragraph and "The sun is high in the sky at noon" was also not in the paragraph.

(16) Look at Figure 6. You will hear a question and a dialog. Listen to the dialog. Don't repeat, just listen. Then answer the question.

The question is: When will Mrs. Fuller go to see the doctor? Now listen to the dialog.

(voices 1 and 2, female; voice 3, male)

voice 1: Dr. Adams' office. voice 2: This is Mrs. Fuller. I want to see the doctor tomorrow morning, please. voice 1: Very well, Mrs. Fuller. Will 10 o'clock be okay? voice 2: Ten will be fine, thank you. voice 1: We'll see you then. voice 3: Who is coming in tomorrow morning, Miss Black? voice 1: Mrs. Fuller called. She is coming at 10 o'clock.

(17) Now write the answer to the question in Figure 6. When will Mrs. Fuller go to see the doctor? (pause 15 sec)

(18) Let's check your answer. The answer is 10 o'clock. Mrs. Fuller is going to see the doctor at 10 o'clock. Listen to the dialog again.

voice 1: Dr. Adams' office. voice 2: This is Mrs. Fuller. I want to see the doctor tomorrow morning, please. voice 1: Very well, Mrs. Fuller. (19) Look at Figure 7. Listen to another question and dialog.

The question is: What time will someone go to Mrs. Node's house? Now listen to the dialog.

voice 1: Hal's Furniture Store. voice 2: This is Nancy Node. Something is wrong with my new refrigerator. Can you send someone to look at it? voice 1: I can send someone there this afternoon at three, Mrs. Node. What's that address? voice 2: 1235 Tall Timber Trail. Three o'clock will be fine. Goodbye. voice 3: Was that a call for me, Hal? voice 1: Yes. Here's the address. Mrs. Node is having a problem with her new refrigerator. I want you to go and look at it at three o'clock.

(20) Now write the answer to the question in Figure 7. What time will someone go to Mrs. Node's house?

(21) Let's check your answer. The answer is 3 o'clock. Someone will go to Mrs. Node's house at 3 o'clock. Listen to the dialog again.

voice 1: Hal's Furniture Store. voice 2: This is Nancy Node. Something is wrong with my new refrigerator.
