(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 4B. (pause 6 sec)
(2) Look at Figure 1. These are pictures of living room furniture. Listen and repeat the words and sentences.
Picture a: armchair...armchair There's an armchair in this room. There's an armchair in this room.
Picture b: coffee table...coffee table This is a coffee table. This is a coffee table.
Picture c: couch...couch You can sit on a couch. You can sit on a couch.
Picture d: end table...end table An end table is different from a coffee table. An end table is different from a coffee table.

(3) Look at Figure 2. Listen to the paragraph. (read at normal speed)

(4) Listen to the paragraph again. This time repeat. Listen. (pause at slashes for repetition)

(5) Now answer these questions. (pause 6 sec after each question; pause for repetition)

(6) Look at Figure 3. Listen to the dialog. Don't write. Just listen. (2 male voices)
voice 1: Do you like animals? voice 2: I like dogs, but I don't like cats. voice 1: Why do you like dogs? voice 2: Because they can stay in the yard. voice 1: That's true.
(7) Now listen again and write the missing words. (read slowly; pause 4 sec after sentences with underlined words)

(8) Now check your answers. Number 1 is animals, a-n-i-m-a-l-s, animals. Number 2 is dogs, d-o-g-s, dogs. Number 3 is like, l-i-k-e, like. Number 4 is yard, y-a-r-d, yard.
(9) Now let's practice the dialog. Repeat. voice 1: Do you like animals? voice 2: I like dogs, but I don't like cats. voice 1: Why do you like dogs? voice 2: Because they can stay in the yard. voice 1: That's true.

(10) Look at Figure 4. Listen to another dialog. Don't write. Just listen. (2 female voices) voice 1: I have a dog and a cat. voice 2: Do they stay in your house? voice 1: No, they stay in the backyard. They like to run and play. voice 2: Do they climb the hill next to your fence? voice 1: Yes, they do. voice 2: I want an animal. I think I'll get a bird. voice 1: Oh, that's nice!
(11) Now listen again and write in the missing words. (read slowly; pause 4 sec after sentences with underlined words) voice 1: I have a dog and a cat. voice 2: Do they stay in your house? voice 1: No, they stay in the backyard. (12) Now check your answers. Here are the missing words. Number 1 is cat, c-a-t, cat. Number 2 is backyard, b-a-c-k-y-a-r-d, backyard. Number 3 is run, r-u-n, run. Number 4 is hill, h-i-l-l, hill. Number 5 is fence, f-e-n-c-e, fence. Number 6 is animal, a-n-i-m-a-l, animal. Number 7 is bird, b-i-r-d, bird.
(13) Now let's practice the dialog. (14) Now look at Figure 5. Listen to a paragraph and select the information you do not hear. Circle a, b, or c. Choose what is not in the paragraph. First listen to the sentences in Figure 5. a. Your address is the number of your house. b. You put your phone number with your address. c. Your city and state are in your address.
Now listen to the paragraph. (read at normal speed)
Your address is the number of your house. It is the names of your street, city, and state. People may want to write to you or visit you. They need your address. You can put all your friends' addresses in a notebook. Now you have a book with addresses--an address book.
(15) Now select the information you did not hear. Circle a, b, or c. (pause 15 sec)
(16) Listen to the paragraph again and check your answer. (read at normal speed)
