AUDIO TRACK 1

(1) Hello.

(2) Open your books to the activities for Lesson 2A. (pause 6 sec)

(3) Look at Figure 1 and repeat the words and sentences.

Picture A: automobile...automobile Jeff bought a new automobile.

Picture B: accident...accident Jeff had an accident in his automobile.

Picture C: ran...ran Ray ran the red light.

Picture D: cause...cause Ray caused the accident.

Picture E: fault...fault The accident was Ray's fault.

Picture F: policeman...policeman The policeman arrived at the accident.

Picture G: ticket...ticket The policeman gave Ray a ticket.

Picture H: careless...careless Ray is a very careless driver.

Picture I: fine...fine Ray had to pay the fine.

(4) Look at Figure 1 again. Listen to the sentences. Match the sentence with the picture it describes. Write the number of the sentence under the correct picture. (pause 4 sec after second reading)

Number 3: Jeff bought a new, light blue automobile. Jeff bought a new, light blue automobile.

(5) Now check your answers and repeat the answers. (pause for repetition)

(6) Look at Figure 2. Listen to the following paragraph. You will hear it two times. Write the topic of the paragraph in your book. Try to write it in one or two words.

There are many things you can do at the bank. You can open a checking account or a savings account. You can make deposits or withdrawals on your accounts. You can also cash a check. You can get a lot of information about your money at the bank.

Listen again.

(8) Now listen to the next paragraph, and write the topic in your book.

There are many different ways to get exercise. You can run, walk, work out in the gym, or do exercises. Some exercises you can do are situps and pushups. Also, you can play baseball, basketball, soccer, or volleyball to get exercise.

(10) Look at Figure 3. Listen to the paragraph. Fill in the chart box outline as you hear the paragraph. You will hear the paragraph twice.

Robert and Sandy bought a new house. Now they have to buy some things for the house. For the living room they need to buy a sofa, coffee table, and a bookcase. In the kitchen they need a refrigerator, a stove and a can opener. And for the bedroom they will buy a bed, some curtains, and a big mirror.

Listen to the paragraph again and complete the outline.

Robert and Sandy bought a new house. Now they have to buy some things for the house. For the living room they need to buy a sofa, coffee table, and a bookcase. (12) Look at Figure 4. First, listen to the paragraph. Next, mark the punctuation. Then, rewrite the paragraph. (THIS NEEDS TO BE READ BY A MALE VOICE)

I answered the phones at work today. Two people called for Sergeant Anderson while he was at lunch. He returned their calls when he got back. Mrs. Green called and wanted to talk to her husband, Major Green. He was busy. She said, "I'll call back later." I received one call. It was from my wife. She told me to bring home some milk and bread.

Listen and mark the paragraph. (pause 5 sec at the end of each sentence)

(1) Hello. Open your book to the activities for Lesson 2B.
(pause 6 sec.)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Repeat the words and sentences as you look at the pictures.

Picture Number 1: seat belts...seat belts
All new cars have seat belts.

fasten...fasten
They are fastening their seat belts.

buckle up...buckle up
They are buckling up.

Picture Number 2: law...law
The law says that drivers must buckle up.

obey...obey
Drivers must obey all traffic laws.

Picture Number 3: broke...broke
They did not wear their seat belts.
They broke the law.

Picture Number 4: careful...careful
Johnny is a careful driver. He obeys all the laws.

(3) Look at Figure 2. Listen and repeat the lines of the dialog. (two male voices) (pause for repetition)

[voice 1] Fasten your seat belt.
[voice 2] Do I have to?

[voice 1] Yes, it's a state law. You must buckle up.
[voice 2] I don't want to break the law.

[voice 1] You won't because I'm a careful driver, and I always obey the law.

(4) Look at Figure 2 again. I will read Sam's part and you read Ted's part. Listen to my sentences, then say yours. Ready? Okay.
(pause 5 sec after each item)

[voice] Fasten your seat belt.
[voice] Yes, it's a state law. You must buckle up.

[voice] You won't because I'm a careful driver, and I always obey the law.

(5) Now look at Figure 2 one more time. We are changing roles. You read Sam's lines this time. Okay, begin. (pause 5 sec after each item)

[voice] Do I have to?
[voice] I don't want to break the law.

(6) Look at Figure 3. Repeat the sentences.

Number 1: The Smith's house is similar to the Johnson's house.

Number 2: Kevin's truck is different from mine.

Number 3: Peter's score is the same as Jim's.

Number 4: Their suits are alike.

(7) Look at Figure 3 again. Answer the questions by selecting the correct word for each picture. (pause 4 sec after each question)

Number 1: Look at the houses. Are they similar, the same, or alike?

Number 2: Look at the trucks. Are they similar, the same, or different?

Number 3: Look at the scores. Are they similar, the same, or different?

Number 4: Look at the suits. Are they similar, different, or alike?

(8) Now check your answers and repeat them. (pause for repetition)

Number 1 is a, similar. Repeat: The houses are similar.

Number 2 is c, different. Repeat: The trucks are different.

Number 3 is b, the same. Repeat: The scores are the same.

Number 4 is c, alike. Repeat: The suits are alike.

(9) Look at Figure 4. Listen to the dialog. Use the directions to find the locations of the bank and the restaurant on the map. Write the letters next to the correct buildings. (two voices)

[voice 1] I need to go to the bank. Can you tell me how to get there?

[voice 2] Okay. We are at Plaza and Fifteenth Street. To get to the bank go up Fifteenth Street to Main Street. Turn right on Main. Go straight ahead for one block. The bank is on the corner of Main and Fourth Streets. (pause 4 sec)

[voice 1] Thanks.

[voice 2] Sure. Oh, have you eaten lunch?

[voice 1] No, I haven't. Do you want to eat later?

[voice 2] Yes, let's meet at the Mexican restaurant at eleven thirty.

[voice 1] Okay. How do you get there from the bank?

[voice 2] The bank is on Main and Fourth. To get to the restaurant go across Fourth Street and up one block. The restaurant is on the corner of Broadway and Fourth.

[voice 1] Thanks. I'll see you at eleven thirty. (pause 4 sec)

(10) Check your answers.

The bank is letter C.

The restaurant is letter E.

(11) Look at Figure 5. Repeat the sentences. (pause for repetition)

Number 1: Repeat: Tell Mike to lock the door.

Number 2: Repeat: Tell Fred not to pick me up tomorrow.

Number 3: Repeat: Tell the children to fasten their seat belts.

Number 4: Repeat: Tell Jimmy to cross the street at the corner.

(13) Look at Figure 7. Read the words in the box. Listen to a sentence and choose the correct word to complete it. Read the words now.
