LANGUAGE LABORATORY ACTIVITIES BOOK 9, LESSON 4A
Figure 1
Repeat the words and sentences.
- run out (of) / ran out (of) gasoline/gas tank almost empty gauge
Alex is running out of gasoline. The gas tank is almost empty. The gauge is on "E".
- gas station fill up restroom
There's a gas station over there. Alex can fill up the tank. Rita can wash her hands in the restroom.
- full ladies' room
Alex filled up the tank; the tank is full now. Rita washed her hands in the ladies' room.
- spill men's room
Alex spilled some gasoline on his shoes and hands. He cleaned up in the men's room.

Rita: All right. I'm going to look at the map and see which town is next.

(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet for Lesson 4A. (pause 6 sec)
(2) Look at Figure 1. Repeat the words and the sentences. (pause long enough for students to repeat the words and sentences)
Number 1: run out of...run out of ran out of...ran out of gasoline...gasoline gas...gas tank...tank almost...almost empty...empty gauge...gauge Alex is running out of gasoline. The gas tank is almost empty. The gauge is on "E".
Number 2: gas station...gas station fill up...fill up restroom...restroom There's a gas station over there. Alex can fill up the tank. Rita can wash her hands in the restroom.
Number 3: full...full ladies' room...ladies' room Alex filled up the tank; the tank is full now. Rita washed her hands in the ladies' room.
Number 4: spill...spill men's room...men's room Alex spilled some gasoline on his shoes and hands. He cleaned up in the men's room.

I need to go to the restroom and wash my hands. [script voice] A few minutes later... male: Is the men's room next to the ladies' room? female: Yes, it is. (4) This time you read Alex's lines, and I'll read Rita's lines. Begin! (pause as indicated) (pause 4 sec) female: Don't worry. There's a gas station over there. (pause 5 sec) female: Good. I need to go to the restroom and wash my hands. [script voice] A few minutes later... (pause 4 sec) female: Yes, it is. Is the tank full now? (pause 7 sec) female: All right. I'm going to look at the map and see which town is next.
(5) Now answer the questions and repeat the correct answers. (pause for student to answer and to repeat the correct answer)
What is Alex running out of? (pause) Repeat: Alex is running out of gasoline.
What is almost empty? Repeat: The gas tank is almost empty.
Why does Rita say, "Don't worry"? Repeat: Because a gas station is near.
What does Alex have to do at the gas station? Repeat: He has to fill up the gas tank.
What does Rita need to do? Repeat: She needs to go to the restroom and wash her hands.
Is the tank empty or full after they leave the station?
Repeat: The tank is full.
Why does Alex have to clean up? Repeat: Because he spilled some gasoline on his shoes.
Where are Rita and Alex going from the station? Repeat: They're going to another town.

(6) Go to Figure 3. Look at the pictures and repeat the words and sentences. (pause long enough for repetition)
Number 1: really...really motel...motel pleased...pleased Alex is really tired. Rita and Alex are going to spend the night at this motel. The clerk is pleased.

Is the clerk sad?" Repeat: No, he's pleased.
Number 2: What does Rita fill with water? Repeat: She fills the bathtub with water.
What is Rita going to take? Repeat: She's going to take a long bath.
Number 3: Where does Alex put his baggage? Repeat: He puts it on the hard chair.
Where is Alex sitting? Repeat: He's sitting in the soft chair.
What does he hope to do? Repeat: He hopes to relax before he goes to bed.
Number 4: What does Rita check? Repeat: She checks the alarm clock.

(11) Now answer these questions and repeat the correct answers.
What did the man do first? (pause 4 sec) Repeat: He stepped on the lady's toes. (pause 4 sec)
What did the man do next? (pause 4 sec) Repeat: He apologized for stepping on her toes. (pause 4 sec)

(12) Go to Figure 5 and repeat the sentences. (pause for repetition)

There are three places that are important for automobile travelers: the motel (or motor hotel), the restaurant, and the gas station. In the motel, you can relax, watch TV, and sleep. In the restaurant, you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner when you get hungry. At the gas station, you can put gasoline in your car and get a drink.
Listen to the paragraph again and complete the outline. (pause as indicated)
