AUDIO TRACK 1

(1) Hello! Open your book to the activities for Lesson 1A. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at the pictures in Figure 1. Listen and repeat. (pause for repetition after words and each sentence)

Number 1: vending machine...vending machine
This is a vending machine. A vending machine sells many different things.

popular...popular
Vending machines are popular. Everyone uses them.

Number 2: sodas...sodas...soda pop...soda pop
Sodas are sometimes called soda water.
A soda or soda pop is a drink.

Number 3: chips...chips
Do you like potato chips or corn chips?
Chips are usually made with salt.

Number 4: chewing gum...chewing gum
Do you want a piece of chewing gum?
Some people chew gum between meals.

Number 5: candy bar...candy bar
I like to eat chocolate candy bars.
Chocolate candy bars are a sweet snack.

(5) Look at Figure 3. Look at the pictures and repeat the words and sentences. (pause after words and at /'s for repetition)

Insert the money in the slot. / Put the money in the small opening. / She is inserting the money / into the opening for coins.

Make your selection or pick out a snack.
Pull a knob for your selection.

The selection will drop or fall when you pull the knob. / Lift the door and take out your selection.

(15) Look at Figure 8. Listen to sentences about the dialog. Circle the answers that mean the same. Circle a, b, or c. (pause 4 sec after the statement; pause for repetition)

Number 1: Carl couldn't make the machine work. (pause) The answer is letter a. Repeat: He couldn't operate it.

Number 2: The machine was out of that diet drink. (pause) The answer is letter c. Repeat: It didn't have any of that diet drink.

(16) Look at the example in Figure 9. Listen to a paragraph and select the main idea. (pause 6 sec after the paragraph)

Vending machines are everywhere. They're all around the world. You can find them in many places. They sell snacks, soft drinks, stamps, cigarettes, socks, stockings, sandwiches and many other things. People everywhere can get almost anything from a vending machine.

(17) Circle b. "People everywhere use vending machines" is the main idea of the paragraph.

(18) Now listen to a paragraph and select the main idea.

Number 1: People enjoy vending machines. In 1880, one of the first vending machines sold chewing gum. In 1902 some cities had rooms for vending machines only. These machines sold different snacks. Then in 1927, machines started to sell soft drinks. These machines were popular in 1880 and they are popular today.

(19) Now select the main idea for number 1. (pause 10 sec) The answer is c. The main idea is "Vending machines are popular machines."

(20) Listen to another paragraph and select the main idea.

Number 2: You can always eat or drink something when there's a vending machine near you. Many people get hungry between meals, and buy snacks from vending machines. The machines have a big selection of things. People can eat snacks at any time of the day or night. Vending machines never close. It's good to have one near your home.

(21) Now select the main idea for number 2. (pause 10 sec) The answer is a. The main idea is: It's good to have a vending machine near your home.
