Lesson 4A

AUDIO TRACK 1

(1) Hello! Open your book to the activities for Lesson 4A. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. These are some pictures of my family. Listen and repeat the underlined words two times. (pause for repetition after each word) folks...folks

(3) Now turn the Page. Repeat: relatives...relatives

(4) Now turn back to picture 1. Listen while I tell you about my family. (pause)

Grandfather Jones is in picture 1 and Grandmother Jones is in picture 2. They are my mother's parents. They're my grandparents on my mother's side of the family. I see these grandparents often because we live in the same city. Grandfather doesn't work any more. He and Grandmother like to take trips very often.

Picture 3 shows my grandparents on my father's side. Don and Lita Garcia are my father's parents. They don't live in this city. They live in New Mexico. It's far from here. I only see them one or two times a year.

Then in picture 4 are my mother and father. This is an old picture. There is a very young child in the picture with my mother and father. My mother has a baby in her arms. That baby is me! I was a ten-month old baby. That was a long time ago. The little boy in the picture next to my father is my brother Frank. He was three years old in the picture.

(5) Go to the next page and you will see some more of my relatives. (pause)

First in pictures 5 and 6, are my mother's sisters, my aunts: Aunt Mary and Aunt June. Picture 5 is a picture of Aunt Mary when she was single before she got married. Next to Aunt Mary is a picture of Aunt June. Aunt June never married. She's single. She lives alone in a small town not very far from here.

Next to Aunt June in picture 7 is Uncle Jerry. Uncle Jerry is my father's brother. Uncle Jerry lives in New Mexico also, but he comes to visit us often. My father has a sister too, but I don't have her picture. Her name is Jean. She's my Aunt Jean.

Picture 8 shows Aunt Mary after she got married. It's a picture of her family. My Aunt Mary has a very happy marriage. In the picture with her is her husband, Uncle Ben, and her children Meg and Rob, my cousins. Aunt Mary and her family live here in town. My cousins and I went to the same schools when we were growing up. It's nice to have your relatives in the same city.

And finally in picture 9, are my brother Frank's children. They are my newest and youngest relatives: my niece Jane and my nephew Jack. My niece is two and a half years old. My nephew is a four-month old baby. They're the babies of the family. I hope you enjoyed my pictures. I like to look at them and think of my folks.

(6) Now look at Figure 2. Listen to the question and circle the correct answer, a, b, or c.

Number 1: Who's my father's father? (pause 4 sec after each question) Letter a is the answer. Repeat: My father's father is my grandfather.

(9) Look at Figure 3. Listen. (pause) Next month, I will graduate from school. I asked my relatives to come. Some of them will be able to come and some of them won't be able to come. Look at the example. You ask the question and someone will answer it. Then you put an x on the chart in the yes, no, or maybe column. Repeat the example question: Will Aunt June be able to come? (pause 4 sec) Now listen to the answer and mark the chart. (pause) Listen: I'm not sure. Aunt June might be able to come. (pause 4 sec) Put an x in number 1 under "maybe".

(10) Now look at the chart and ask a question. Listen to the answer and mark the chart. (pause as marked)

Number 2: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Will Grandfather and Grandmother Jones be able to come? Listen: Yes, Grandfather and Grandmother Jones will be able to come. Mark the chart.

Number 3: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Will Aunt Mary be able to come? (pause 4 sec) Listen and mark: No. She won't be able to come.

Number 4: (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Will Uncle Ben be able to come? (pause 4 sec) Listen and mark: He isn't sure. He might.

(11) Now I'm going to ask you a question. Use the chart and answer in a complete sentence. The questions are not in the same order. (pause as marked; pause for repetition)

Will Grandfather and Grandmother Jones be able to come? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: Yes, Grandfather and Grandmother Jones will be able to come.

(12) Look at Figure 4. Look at the connective words in the box. (pause after each word) Repeat: after...after that...finally...first...last...lastly...next...second...then

(13) Now listen to a paragraph two times. First just listen for the connective words.

Bob changed my flat tire yesterday. First, he opened the trunk and took the wrench, the jack and the spare tire out of the trunk. Next, he took off the hub cap and loosened the nuts with the wrench. After that, he put the jack in place and lifted the car. He removed the nuts and took off the flat tire. Then, he put the spare tire on the wheel, and put the nuts on. He lowered the car, tightened the nuts, and replaced the hub cap. And last, he put the jack, wrench, and flat tire back in the trunk of the car.

(14) Now listen again. This time write the connective words when you hear them. (Read a little slower, slightly emphasizing the connective words)

Then decide on the snack before you insert your money. Next, insert your coins in the coin slot. Then be sure to push the right letter and button for your selection. Finally, after the snack drops to the tray, take out your selection.

(16) Now listen again. This time write the connective words when you hear them. (Read a little slower slightly emphasizing the connective words)
