A VENDING MACHINE

Read the sentences.

This is a vending machine.
It's a snack vending machine.
A snack vending machine dispenses snacks.

Put your coins in the slot.
The snack is supposed to drop into the tray.
Sometimes, the coins stick and nothing comes out.

When Willie moved away from home, he had to learn how to do his laundry. The first time he went to the laundry room in the barracks, he didn't know how to operate a washing machine. He had to find out.

Willie had a roommate, Frank. Frank knew how to operate a washing machine. Frank taught Willie. These were his instructions:

First, put your light clothes in one machine, and your dark clothes in another machine. They have to be in different machines. Next, select the correct temperature. Wash light colors in warm water and use cold water for dark colors. Put one cup of detergent in each machine. Then insert four quarters in the slots. Last, push the coin tray in.

Willie found out that it was very easy to operate a washing machine. He was glad because he had to do his laundry many, many times after that.

Steve: A man asks for your help. He thinks the vending machine is out of order. You just got a drink from the machine. You don't think it's out of order. You think the coins might be stuck. Tell him how to get his money or a drink.
At the Snack Vending Machine

Fred: You want to buy a snack. Ask someone to tell you how to use a snack vending machine.

Jack: A man asks you how to operate a snack vending machine. Tell him how to use it. Use these words in your instructions: slot, coins, numbers, buttons, drop, take out, door.
At the Candy Machine

Mark: You want to buy some candy. You deposit money in the slot, but nothing happens. You ask a man for help.

David: A man put his money into the vending machine and it didn't dispense the candy. He asks for your help. You think the machine is out of his favorite candy. Tell him how to get his money back or how to make another selection.

At the Stamp Vending Machine

Sam: You are in the post office. You need to get some stamps, but you don't have any quarters. You don't know how to get change or how to operate a stamp machine. There is a man near the machine. Ask him to help you.

Ted: You are in the post office. A man has some dollar bills, but no change. There is a change machine near the stamp vending machine. He asks you how to get change and how to use the stamp machine. Answer the man's questions. Tell him how to use the two machines.

At the Coffee Vending Machine

Carl: You want a cup of coffee. You don't know how to operate the coffee vending machine. Ask the man next to the machine to tell you how to operate it. Ask about the price and about cream and sugar.

Ed: A man asks you how to operate the coffee vending machine. The machine has coffee with sugar, coffee with sugar and cream, coffee with cream only, or coffee only. The coffee costs 35¢ a cup. Tell him about the machine and how to operate it.

At the Sandwich Vending Machine

Lynn: Ask someone how to use the sandwich vending machine.

Larry: A woman asks you how to use a sandwich vending machine. Tell her how to operate the machine. Also tell her how to get her money back when the machine is out of sandwiches.
