(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 1C. (pause 6 sec)
(2) Look at Figure 1. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause for repetition)
Number 1: dot...dot The marks above A, B, and C are called dots.
Number 2: connect...connect A line connects dot A and dot B.
Number 3: inch...inch inches...inches. The line is two inches long.
Number 4: middle...middle Dot B is in the middle of the line.
Number 5: horizontal...horizontal Line A-C is horizontal.
Number 6: vertical...vertical Line D-E is vertical.
Number 7: perpendicular...perpendicular Line A-C and Line D-E are perpendicular.
Number 8: parallel...parallel Line A is parallel to line B, / line C is parallel to line D, / and line E is parallel to line F. The lines are parallel.

(3) Now go to Figure 2. Look at the rectangle and listen to the sentences. Circle T if the sentence is true. Circle F if the sentence is false. (pause 6 sec between items)
Number 1: Side 1 is vertical.
Number 2: Side 2 is horizontal.

Number 4: Side 3 is perpendicular to side 4.
Number 5: Side 1 is perpendicular to sides 2 and 4.

(13) Please look at Figure 7 and listen. Vince is a salesman in New York. This week he's on a business trip to Miami. This is his calendar for the trip. Read the calendar now. (pause 20 sec) Now answer some questions about the trip. (pause as indicated; pause for repetition)
Look at Tuesday afternoon. (short pause) It's Tuesday afternoon now. Vince is leaving for Miami. Has he had his airline reservations for a week? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: No, he's had them since Monday morning. (pause for repetition)
Has he had his airplane ticket very long? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: No, he's only had it since Tuesday at 10:00.
Look at Wednesday morning. Vince went to the office to work with other salesmen. (slight pause) It's Wednesday evening now. Have the salesmen been at the office all day? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: Yes, they've been at the office since 8 o'clock this morning.
Now it's one-thirty Thursday afternoon. Vince is arriving at the airport. Has he been in Miami for a week? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: No, he's been in Miami for about two days.
Vince and some other salesmen arrived at the airport at 1:30. Right now, at 4:30, they're getting on the airplane. Have they been at the airport for one hour? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: No, they've been there for three hours.
Now go to Friday morning. (slight pause) It's Friday morning and Vince is getting ready for work again. Has he been home since Thursday evening? (pause 6 sec) Repeat: Yes, he's been home since 6:45 Thursday evening.

(14) Look at Figure 8 now. Listen to the sentences. Then repeat them. (pause after each question for repetition)

Number 2: How long have you been a doctor? How long must I wait before I can eat? How long do I have to stay in the hospital? How long should I keep that thermometer in my mouth?

(15) Now look at Figure 9. Listen to the examples and repeat the questions.

(16) Now listen to the sentences and change them to questions. (pause 3 sec after each statement and for repetition of question)

(17) Now go to Figure 10. Listen to the paragraph; don't repeat it. Listen for connective words like first, next, then, finally, and last. Don't write. Just listen.
When you have a cold, you should remember to do these things: First, drink a lot of water and fruit juice. Second, keep warm and dry. Third, stay home when you can. Rest on a sofa or go to bed. Last, always remember to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Don't give other people your cold.
(18) Listen to the paragraph again. This time, when you hear a connective word, write it on the correct line in Figure 10. (read a little more slowly and pause 2 sec between sentences)
