(1) Hello. Open your books to the activities for Lesson 4C.

(2) Go to Figure 1. Read the example as you listen to it.
(use various male, female voices as available) Example.

female voice: David, you need to spend more time with your children. (slight pause)
script voice: What did Jan tell David?
second voice: She told him that he needed to spend more time with his children.
script voice: Repeat: She told him that he needed / to spend more time with his children.

Now listen and answer the question. (pause slightly after line is read: pause after question and for repetition)

Number 1:
female voice: Your coffee is very hot, Mr. Smith.
script voice: What did the waitress tell Mr. Smith? (5 sec)
Repeat: She told him that his coffee was very hot.

Number 2:
male voice: Airman Jones, the captain wants to see you.
script voice: What did Sergeant Wilson tell Airman Jones? (5 sec)
Repeat: He told him that the captain wanted to see him.

Number 3:
female voice: George, you're late for class.
script voice: What did Mrs. Garcia say to George? (pause 5 sec)
Repeat: She told him that he was late for class.

Number 4:
male voice: Waiter, we're ready for our check.
script voice: What did the customer tell the waiter? (5 sec)
Repeat: He told him that they were ready for their check.

Number 5:

male voice: Lou, I can't remember the name of the movie.

Number 8:
female voice: Jack, I really enjoyed dinner.
script voice: What did Tina tell Jack? (pause 5 sec)
Repeat: She told him that she really enjoyed dinner.

(3) Go to Figure 2. Listen to a conversation twice. Then write the answer to the question about the conversation.

Number 1:
(voice 1, voice 2, both male)

voice 1: Tony, did you see Fran last weekend?
voice 2: Yes. She told me she'd see me again this weekend.

Listen again and write the answer.

voice 1: Tony, did you see Fran last weekend?
voice 2: Yes. She told me she'd see me again this weekend.

(pause 35 sec)
What did Fran tell Tony?
Repeat: She told him she'd see him again this weekend.

Number 2:
(voice 1, voice 2, both male)

voice 1: Don, will Mary come to the party?
voice 2: No. She told me she couldn't come.

Listen again to number 2. Then write the answer.

voice 1: Don, will Mary come to the party?
voice 2: No. She told me she couldn't come.

(pause 35 sec) What did Mary tell Don about the party?
Repeat: She told him / that she couldn't come to the party.

Number 3:
(2 female voices)

voice 1: Jill, who recommended this restaurant to you?
voice 2: Floyd did. He told me it was very good and reasonable.

Listen again. Then answer question number 3.

voice 1: Jill, who recommended this restaurant to you?
voice 2: Floyd did. He told me it was good and very reasonable.

(pause 35 sec) What did Floyd tell Jill about the restaurant?
Repeat: He told her that it was good and very reasonable.

Number 4:
(two male voices)

voice 1: What did the sergeant say to you, Nick?
voice 2: He told me I had to stay in the barracks tonight.

Listen again; then write the answer to the question.

voice 1: What did the sergeant say to you, Nick?
voice 2: He told me I had to stay in the barracks tonight.

(pause 35 sec) What did the sergeant tell Nick?
Repeat: He told him he had to stay in the barracks tonight.

Number 5:
(two male voices)

voice 1: What time is your appointment?
voice 2: The nurse told me that the doctor could see me at one-thirty.

Listen again. Then answer the question.

(5) Look at Figure 4. Write the words that you hear. (pause 3 sec after you spell the word)

Number 4: boring...boring, b-o-r-i-n-g

(6) Now answer the questions you hear. Use the words you wrote in Figure 4. Let's do number 1 together. (pause as indicated; pause for repetition)

Number 1: What did you think of the movie you saw last night? The first word you have is "funny." Listen to the answer: I thought it was funny. Repeat: I thought it was funny.

Number 2: What is your opinion of the John Sunshine show?
(pause 4 sec)
Repeat: I think it's dull.

Number 3: How was the food at the Tree House Restaurant?
(pause 4 sec)
Repeat: I thought it was wonderful.

Number 4: How was the movie at the Star yesterday?
(pause 4 sec)
Repeat: I thought it was boring.

Number 5: What do you think of The New Lucille Show?
(pause 4 sec)
Repeat: I think it's great.

(7) Look at Figure 5. Listen and follow the directions. Complete the chart / grid by writing the symbols in the correct boxes. Use the key to help you. (pause 5 sec after second repetition)
