(4) Look at Figure 1. Read the answers. (pause 20 sec) Now, listen to a question. Write the number of the question in front of the answer. (pause 15 sec after each question)

voice 2: Yes, Captain Douglas, please.
voice 1: I'm sorry, sir. He's not here right now. May I take a message?
voice 2: Yes. This is Sgt Richards. I am in Detroit, and I won't be back tomorrow. I need to ask for two more days of leave.
voice 1: Okay, Sgt Richards, I'll give him your message. Call back in two hours, and I'll have an answer for you.
voice 2: Thanks.

(door opening)

voice 1: Captain Douglas.
voice 3: Yes.
voice 1: Sgt Richards called. He said that he was in Detroit and needed two more days of leave. He'll call back in about thirty minutes for his answer.
voice 3: If I'm not here, tell him Okay. There's no problem with the leave. I'll see him in about two days.
voice 1: Yes, sir.

What did Sgt Richards need to ask Captain Douglas? (pause 15 sec)

voice 1: It's not until seven tonight.
voice 2: I'll have her at your house at seven o'clock.
voice 1: Thanks.

(door banging shut)

voice 3: I'm home, Mom.
voice 1: Lorraine, Sue has asked you to have dinner at her house tonight. They are going to eat at seven o'clock.

What are you doing? voice 2: Well, I want to add on another bedroom and bathroom to my house. voice 1: That sounds nice. voice 2: It will be nice, once it's finished. voice 1: Hey, Carl. Did you hear about Mike's plans? voice 3: No, I didn't. voice 1: He said that he wanted to add on a new bedroom and a new bathroom to his house.

(4) Look at Figure 1 again. Write the answer to the question about the dialog.

  1. What did Mike say about his house? (pause 30 sec)

(5) The answer is: He said that he wanted to add on a new bedroom and a new bathroom to his house.

(6) Listen to this dialog and take notes.

voice 1: Hello, Mr. Parker. Where's Mrs. Parker? voice 2: She's not home. She's in Chicago. voice 1: Tell her hello for me when you talk to her. voice 3: What did he say about Mrs. Parker? voice 1: He said that she wasn't home. He said that she was in Chicago.

(7) Now answer this question. Use your notes to help you. 2. What did Mr. Parker say about his wife? (pause 30 sec)

(9) Listen to one more dialog and take notes.

He'll be back in about thirty minutes. voice 1: Thank you, sir. I'll come back later. voice 2: Sgt Robinson. voice 3: Yes, sir. voice 2: Sgt Jackson came by. He wanted to see you. voice 3: Thank you for the message, sir.

(10) Answer this question from your notes. 3. What did Captain Brooks say about Sgt Robinson? (pause 30 sec)

(12) Look at Figure 2. Read the paragraph, and then listen to the questions. Underline the answer; then write the number of the question under the answer. Look at the example. (pause 10 sec after each question)

Number 1: Where did Barbara go? Number 2: What kind of things did she need? Number 3: What did she buy for her living room? Number 4: What did she get for her kitchen? Number 5: What did she buy for the bedroom?

(13) Let's check your answers. Number 1, "Where did Barbara go?" You should have "the mall" underlined.

Number 2, "What kind of things did she need?" You should have "things for her house" underlined.

Number 3, "What did she buy for her living room?" You should have "sofa" underlined.

Number 4, "What did she get for her kitchen?" You should have "microwave" underlined.

And, Number 5, "What did she buy for the bedroom?" You should have "curtains" underlined.

(14) Now let's begin. Read the paragraph and be ready to answer the questions. (pause 20 sec)

(15) Now listen to the questions. Answer them like the example. (pause 10 sec after each question)

Number 1: What did Art do to his house? Number 2: What were his additions? Number 3: What did he buy for the kitchen? Number 4: What did he buy for the living room? Number 5: What did he buy for the patio?

(16) Let's check your answers. Number 1, "What did Art do to his house?" You should have "added on" underlined.

Number 2, "What were his additions?" You should have "a bedroom, a bathroom, and a patio" underlined.

Number 3, "What did he buy for the kitchen?" You should have "a microwave" underlined.

Number 4, "What did he buy for the living room?" You should have "a stereo" underlined.

And, Number 5, "What did he buy for the patio?" You should have "a table" underlined.

(17) Now read the next paragraph. (pause 15 sec) Listen to the questions and answer them as you did before. (pause 5 sec after each question)

Number 1: What is Virginia planning? Number 2: What did she ask her friends to bring? Number 3: What did she ask her brother to do? Number 4: What is she doing?

(18) Let's check your answers. Number 1, "What is Virginia planning?" You should have "a get-together" underlined.

Number 2, "What did she ask her friends to bring?" You should have "their cassettes and their records" underlined.

Number 3, "What did she ask her brother to do?" You should have "cut wood for the fireplace" underlined.

And, Number 4, "What is she doing?" You should have "cooking a lot of food" underlined.

(19) Read the last paragraph. (pause 10 sec) Answer the questions. (pause 5 sec after each question)

Number 1: What did Barbara do to her house? Number 2: What did she do to the living room? Number 3: What did she do to the kitchen? Number 4: What else did she enlarge?

(20) Let's check your answers. Number 1, "What did Barbara do to her house?" You should have "enlarged several rooms" underlined.

Number 2, "What did she do to the living room?" You should have "enlarged the living room and added a fireplace" underlined.

Number 3, "What did she do to the kitchen?" You should have "enlarged the kitchen and added a microwave" underlined.

And, Number 4, "What else did she enlarge?" You should have "patio" underlined.

(21) Look at Figure 3. There are some dialogs that are not complete. Ask questions to complete these dialogs. Look at the example. Mike says, "Do you speak French or Spanish?" Stan's answer is not there. Then there's a question that says: Did Stan say that he spoke French or Spanish? This is the kind of question that you need to ask. Ask the question. (pause 3 sec) Stan said that he spoke French. Write "I speak French." on the line next to the name Stan. (pause 10 sec)

Read Dialog 1, and write a question to ask what Pat said. (pause 20 sec) Let's check your question. Your question should be: Did Pat say he wanted Chinese or Italian food? Now listen to the answer. He said he wanted Italian food. Write Pat's answer on the line to complete the dialog. (pause 5 sec) Did you write "I want Italian food." on the line? That completes this dialog.

Go to Dialog 2, and write down a question. (pause 20 sec) Let's check your question. It should be: Did Frank say that he wanted to watch TV or go to the movies? Now listen to the answer. He said that he wanted to watch TV. Write his answer on the line. (pause 10 sec) The answer is "I want to watch TV."

Read Dialog 3 and write your question. (pause 20 sec) Your question should be: Did Paul say that he swam every day? Now listen to the answer. Paul said that he didn't like to swim. Now, write what he said on the line. (pause 10 sec) The answer is "No, I don't like to swim."

(22) Look at Figure 4. This is a dictation exercise. You will hear a paragraph three times. The first time just listen. (read at normal speed)

Randy is in his last year of high school. Last Friday, he made up his mind to go to college. Now, he has to decide what career field to choose. His parents told him that a degree in business would give him a good future. He's still confused about the courses he wants to study, but he has time to think it over.

Listen to the paragraph again. Write what you hear. (pause 20 sec at /)
