(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities book to Lesson 1C. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen to the words and sentences in Figure 1 and repeat them. (pause for repetition)

(3) Look at Figure 2. Look at the pictures and listen to the sentences about them. Then answer the questions. (pause 4 sec after each question)

Look at picture 1. These boats are not the same. One is little and the other is big.

Are these two boats alike? No, they're not alike; they're different. Repeat: The boats are not alike.

Are both boats big? No, one boat is big, and the other boat is little. Repeat: One boat is big, and the other boat is little.

(4) Look at picture 2. These cars are different. They are opposites. One car is old. It is slow. The other car is new. It is fast.

Are these cars alike? No, these cars are not alike. They are different. Repeat: The old car and the new car are different.

Are both cars old? No, one car is old. The other car is new. Repeat: The other car is new.

Is the new car fast? Yes, the new car is fast. Repeat: The new car is fast.

Is the old car fast also? No, the old car is slow. Repeat: The old car is slow.

(5) Look at picture 3. Sick is the opposite of well. One man is sick and the other man is well. These men are not the same.

What is the opposite of well? Sick. Repeat: Sick is the opposite of well.

Are both men sick? No, both men are not sick. Only one man is sick. The other man is well. Repeat: The other man is well.

(6) Look at picture 4. These children are the same. Both children are small and weak. They are not big and strong. Some men are very strong, but children are weak.

Are the children alike? Yes. Repeat: The children are alike.

Are both children strong? No, both children are not strong. Both children are weak. Repeat: Both children are weak.


Are some men very strong? Yes, some men are very strong. Repeat: Some men are very strong.

(7) Now look at picture 5. Wide is the opposite of narrow. One of these neckties is wide. The other necktie is narrow. The neckties are different.

Are the neckties different? Yes, they are. The neckties are not alike. Repeat: The neckties are not alike.

What is the opposite of narrow? Wide. Wide is the opposite of narrow. Repeat: Wide is the opposite of narrow.

Is one necktie wide? Yes. One necktie is wide, and the other necktie is narrow. Repeat: One necktie is wide, and the other necktie is narrow.

(8) Look at picture 6. These tables are alike. Both tables are round.

Are both tables round? Yes, both tables are round. Repeat: Both tables are round.

(9) Look at Figure 3 and listen. You will hear two words. They will be alike, or they will be opposite. Circle alike or opposite. Let's do the example. Listen and circle.

Example: start / begin start / begin The answer is alike. Start and begin are alike.

(10) Let's begin the exercise. (pause 4 sec between word pairs)

(11) Listen to the words again.

(12) Now check your answers.

Number 1 is alike. Big and large are alike. Repeat: Big and large are alike.

Number 2 is opposite. Fast is the opposite of slow. Repeat: Fast is the opposite of slow.

Number 3 is opposite. Always is the opposite of never. Repeat: Always is the opposite of never.

Number 4 is alike. Have to and must are alike. Repeat: Have to and must are alike.

Number 5 is opposite. Push is the opposite of pull. Repeat: Push is the opposite of pull.

Number 6 is alike. Return and go back are alike. Repeat: Return and go back are alike.

Number 7 is alike. Speak and talk are alike. Repeat: Speak and talk are alike.

Number 8 is opposite. Wide is the opposite of narrow. Repeat: Wide is the opposite of narrow.

Number 9 is also opposite. Open is the opposite of close. Repeat: Open is the opposite of close.

Number 10 is alike. Small and little are alike. Repeat: Small and little are alike.

(13) Look at Figure 4. Look at the first question: Where will the men eat dinner? Now listen to the conversation and answer the question.

(2 male voices)

voice 1: Carl, do you want to eat dinner with us? voice 2: I don't know. Where are you going? voice 1: To the mess hall. voice 2: No, thank you. I don't like the food there. voice 1: Okay. We'll eat in a restaurant downtown. voice 2: Good. Let's go! (pause) Do you have any money?

(14) Now answer the question: Where will the men eat dinner? (pause 4 sec)

The answer is "in a restaurant downtown." Listen to the conversation again.

voice 1: Carl, do you want to eat dinner with us? voice 2: I don't know. Where are you going? voice 1: To the mess hall. voice 2: No, thank you. I don't like the food there. voice 1: Okay. We'll eat in a restaurant downtown. voice 2: Good. Let's go! (pause) Do you have any money?

(15) Look at the second question in Figure 4.

How many cooks does the sergeant need in the mess hall?

Now listen to a conversation.

voice 1: Sergeant, the food in this mess hall is awful. Why? voice 2: Because we have only five cooks, sir, and they're new. We need ten cooks here. voice 1: I'll send some of the men to the other mess hall today. You'll have ten cooks here tomorrow. voice 2: Thank you, sir. That will help us a lot.

(16) Now answer the question: How many cooks does the sergeant need in the mess hall? (pause 4 sec)

Ten. The sergeant needs ten cooks.


(17) Listen to the conversation again.

voice 1: Sergeant, the food in this mess hall is awful. Why? voice 2: Because we have only five cooks, sir, and they're new. We need ten cooks here. voice 1: I'll send some of the men to the other mess hall today. You'll have ten cooks here tomorrow. voice 2: Thank you, sir. That will help us a lot.

(18) Now look at Figure 5. Listen to the sentences. Don't repeat.
