(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 4D. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Look at the pictures. Repeat the underlined words and the sentences.

Picture a: can opener...can opener This is a can opener. This is a can opener.

Picture b: curtain...curtain There's a curtain on the window. There's a curtain on the window.

Picture c: faucet...faucet Water comes from a faucet. Water comes from a faucet.

(3) Look at Figure 2. Listen to each sentence and then select the correct picture. Write the letter of the picture in the blank. Let's do the first one together.

Number 1: This is a can opener. (pause 6 sec) Write c next to Number 1. Look at picture c. This is a can opener.

(4) Now listen and write the letter of the picture. (pause 6 sec after each sentence)

Number 2: Those are new curtains on the window.

Number 3: I like those pretty flowers in the yard.

Number 4: He put the pan in the sink.

Number 5: Becky cooked the chicken in a pot.

Number 6: We got the water from the faucet.

Number 7: I think that's an ugly dog.

(6) Look at Figure 3. Listen to the paragraph. (read at normal speed)

Nancy is changing her kitchen. She put pretty, yellow curtains on the window above the sink. She bought new pots and pans. Norm put a new can opener on the wall for her. She gave her ugly, old can opener to her younger sister. She wants all new things in her pretty, new kitchen.


(7) Listen to the paragraph again. This time repeat.
(pause for repetition)

Nancy is changing her kitchen. / She put pretty, yellow curtains / on the window above the sink. / She bought new pots and pans. / Norm put a new can opener / on the wall for her. / She gave her ugly, old can opener / to her younger sister. / She wants all new things / in her pretty, new kitchen.

(8) Now answer these questions. (pause 8 sec after each question)
Number 1: What is Nancy doing? Repeat: She's changing her kitchen.
Number 2: What did she put on the window above the sink? Repeat: She put pretty yellow curtains on the window.
Number 3: What new things did she buy? Repeat: She bought new pots and pans.
Number 4: How did Norm help her? Repeat: Norm put a new can opener on the wall for her.
Number 5: What did she do with the old can opener? Repeat: She gave the ugly thing to her younger sister.
Number 6: What does Nancy want? Repeat: She wants all new things in her pretty, new kitchen.

(9) Look at Figure 4. At the top of Figure 4 you see six words. Repeat them.
Number 1: always...always
Number 2: often...often
Number 3: usually...usually
Number 4: sometimes...sometimes
Number 5: seldom...seldom
Number 6: never...never

(10) Now listen to sentences. You will hear one of these six words in each sentence. Listen and put an X under the word in Figure 4. Let's do Number 1 together. Listen. He always arrives on time. (slight pause) Put an X under the word "always" for Number 1.

(11) Now listen to the other sentences. Listen and put an X under the word. (pause 5 sec after each item)
Number 2: I sometimes go downtown after work.
Number 3: I usually go home and sleep.
Number 4: Do you always eat at the snack bar?
Number 5: I eat there often.
Number 6: I never play tennis on Wednesday.
Number 7: I usually write letters at night.
Number 8: Amy often visits her mother on the weekend.
Number 9: Bill never answers questions in class.
Number 10: Fran seldom writes her friends.

(12) Now let's check your answers.
Repeat Number 1. He always arrives on time.
