AUDIO TRACK 1

(1) Hello! Open your book to the activities for Lesson 1A. (pause 6 sec)

(2) Look at Figure 1. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause long enough for students to repeat)

(female voice)

Here's a form.

Fill out the form.

Put your signature on the bottom line.

(3) Listen to the dialog.
male voice: Can you help me? I need a new ID card.
female voice: Yes, I can help you. Here's a form. Fill out the form, and put your signature on the bottom line.

(4) Listen.
Mark needs a new ID card. The person at the desk gives him a form. He fills out the form and puts his signature on the bottom line.

(5) Look at Figure 1 again. Answer the questions, then listen and repeat. (pause long enough for students to answer, and then to repeat the correct answer)
What does Mark need?
Repeat: He needs a new ID card.

What does the person at the desk give Mark?
Repeat: The person gives Mark a form.

What does Mark do with the form?
Repeat: He fills it out.

What does Mark write on the bottom line of the form?
Repeat: He writes his signature on the bottom line.

(6) Look at Figure 2. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause long enough for students to repeat)

(7) Listen to the dialog.
male voice: Can you help me? I want to open an account at this bank.

male voice: I want to open a checking account. I don't want to pay for everything with cash.

(8) Mark filled out the form for a checking account. Then the bank clerk gave him a checkbook. Mark also opened a savings account because he wanted to save money for a trip.

(9) Listen.
male voice: I also want to open a savings account because I want to save money for a trip.
female voice: Okay. Fill out this form, and I'll give you a savings account number.

(10) Listen to the conversation again.
male voice: Can you help me? I want to open an account at this bank.
female voice: Yes. What kind of account do you want to open?
male voice: I want to open a checking account. I don't want to pay for everything with cash.
female voice: Yes, I understand. Fill out this form for a checking account, and I'll get you a checkbook.
male voice: I also want to open a savings account because I want to save money for a trip.
female voice: Okay. Fill out this form, and I'll give you a savings account number.

(11) Look at Figure 2 again. You will hear questions. Answer the questions and then listen and repeat. (allow enough time for students to answer the questions and enough time for them to repeat the answer)
Where is Mark?
Repeat: Mark is at the bank.

What does Mark want to do at the bank?
Repeat: He wants to open an account.

What kinds of accounts does he want to open?
Repeat: He wants to open a checking account and a savings account.

Why did Mark want to open a checking account?
Repeat: He didn't want to pay for everything with cash.

What did the bank clerk give Mark when he opened a checking account?
Repeat: The clerk gave Mark a checkbook.

Why does Mark want to open a savings account?
Repeat: He wants to save money for a trip.

What did the clerk give Mark when he opened a savings account?
Repeat: The clerk gave Mark an account number.

(12) Look at Figure 3. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause long enough for students to repeat)

Number 1: passport...passport
Mark will get a passport for his trip.

Number 2: bill...bill
Mark will pay for the passport with a fifty dollar bill.

Number 3: deposit...deposit
Mark will deposit a hundred dollars in his savings account.

Number 4: deposit slip...deposit slip
Mark must fill out a deposit slip / to put the hundred dollars / in his savings account.

Number 5: save...save
Mark will save money for a trip.

Number 6: safe...safe
His money is safe in the bank.

(13) Look at numbers 5 to 8 again. On the lines next to the words, write the sentences you hear. (pause 15 sec at / for students to write the sentences)

Number 5: Mark will save money / for a trip. / He won't spend it.
Listen again: Mark will save money for a trip. He won't spend it.

Number 6: His money is safe / in the bank. / No one will take it.
Listen again: His money is safe in the bank. No one will take it.

Number 7: Mark will get / his passport right away. / He won't wait.
Listen again: Mark will get his passport right away. He won't wait.

Number 8: Mark's passport / will have information / about Mark.
It will have / his home address.
Listen again: Mark's passport will have information about Mark. It will have his home address.

(14) Look at the sentences you wrote. Use the sentences to answer the questions you hear. (pause long enough for students to answer; and then to repeat correct responses)

Where can we find information about Mark?
Repeat: We can find information about Mark in his passport.

Will Mark spend his money?
Repeat: No, he will save money for a trip. / He won't spend it.


Can someone take Mark's money from the bank?
Repeat: No, his money is safe in the bank.

(15) Look at Figure 4. Listen.

(17) Now look at Dialog 1B. This time you begin.

(18) Listen to Dialog 2 in Figure 4.

female voice: Good morning. Can I help you?

(19) Look at Dialog 2A. Read the student's sentence. The woman will begin.

(20) Now look at Dialog 2B in Figure 4. This time, you begin.
