Ned wanted some coffee. He went to his favorite vending machine. This machine always worked and was never out of coffee. Ned stuck a coin in the slot, but the machine didn't work. "No coffee! I can't go out and get coffee right now because I can't be out of my office at this time. I guess I'll try it again before I try another machine." He inserted another coin and pulled the knobs, first for black coffee, then for coffee with cream, and lastly, coffee with cream and sugar. They didn't work. Finally, after he tried many times, Ned wrote "out of order" on a piece of paper and stuck it to the machine. He didn't get any coffee until he went to lunch because he had no more change. Ned felt awful all day because he didn't have his morning coffee.

(2) Look at Figure 1. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause for repetition at slashes and after each sentences)

(3) Look at Figure 2. Listen to part of a sentence. Then use a word in the box and complete the sentence in your book. Write the word on the line. Look at the example.

Listen: When you like something a lot, it's your... (pause 4 sec) The correct word is favorite. Repeat: When you like something a lot, / it's your favorite. (pause for repetition) Now listen. (pause as marked; pause for repetition)

(4) Look at Figure 3. Listen and repeat. (pause for repetition after words and sentences)

Number 4: Listen: Mary won't be home all day today. (pause 4 sec) The answer is letter c. Repeat: She'll be out of the house.

Number 5; Listen: Put another stamp on the letter. (pause 4 sec) The answer is letter a. Repeat: Put a stamp on the letter; stick it on the envelope.

Number 6: Listen: First he called her. Then he went to see her. (pause 4 sec) The answer is letter a. Repeat: Last, he went to see her.

(6) Now look at the example in Figure 5. Read the first sentence. (pause 3 sec) (suggestion: use a different voice for cues)

Now Listen: for his selection Use the sentence you read and the words heard to make a long sentence. Repeat: George lifted the door of the vending machine / for his selection. (pause as marked; pause for repetition)

(7) Now look at number 1. Read the sentence. (pause 4 sec)

Listen: with pockets Complete the sentence. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Sally bought a new dress with big pockets.

Read number 2: Read. (pause 3 sec) Listen: in his friend's car Complete the sentence. (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Frank had an accident in his friend's car.

Read number 3: (pause 3 sec) Listen: for some coffee with cream (pause 4 sec) Repeat: Jan pulled the knob on the machine / for some coffee with cream.

(8) Look at Figure 6. Listen to a conversation. (2 voices: voice 1, female; voice 2, male)

voice 1: Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me how to work this machine? voice 2: Sure. Insert the exact change in the slot. Then pull the knob for your selection. voice 1: Do I have to use the exact change? voice 2: Yes. This machine doesn't give change.

(9) Listen to the conversation again.

voice 1: Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me how to work this machine? voice 2: Sure. Insert the exact change in the slot. Then pull the knob of your selection. voice 1: Do I have to use the exact change? voice 2: Yes. This machine doesn't give change.

(10) Now listen to the question. Choose the best answer. Circle a, b, or c. (pause 6 sec after each question)

(11) Check your answers. Repeat the correct answers. (pause for repetition)

(12) Look at Figure 7. Listen to another conversation. (read at normal speed) (2 voices: voice 1, male; voice 2, female)

voice 1: Excuse me. I put some money in this vending machine, but the diet drink didn't come out. Is it out of order or out of diet drink? voice 2: I don't think it's out of order. I bought a soft drink a few minutes ago. Maybe the coins are stuck. voice 1: What should I do? voice 2: Push the coin release. You'll get your money back or you can make another selection.

(13) Listen to the conversation again. (read at normal speed)

voice 1: Excuse me. I put some money in this vending machine, but the diet drink didn't come out. Is it out of order or out of diet drink? voice 2: I don't think it's out of order.
