# Vocabulary

### A FLAT TIRE
|

Listen to the sentences. Then repeat them.

A car has four <u>wheels</u>.
|

The <u>tire</u> is on the wheel.
|
|
|
|
The <u>hub cap</u> (wheel cover) <u>covers</u> the hub or center of the wheel.
|
|
|
|
When you <u>remove</u> the hub cap, you can see the hub and the <u>nuts</u>.
|
|
|
|
A flat tire has little or no <u>air</u>.
|
|
|
|
The <u>lugs</u>, or nuts, <u>fasten</u> the wheel to the car.

When you <u>loosen</u> the nuts, turn the wrench to the left.

When you <u>tighten</u> the nuts, turn the wrench to the right.

Use the <u>jack</u> to <u>raise</u> the car off the ground.

Some common tire tools are the jack and the wrench.

People also keep the <u>spare tire</u> (fifth or <u>extra tire</u>) in the trunk.

# HOW TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE
|
|
|
|
Look at the pictures while your teacher reads the sentences to you. Repeat the sentences. Then read them.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
1. Take your spare tire, lug wrench, and jack out of the trunk.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
2. Remove the hub cap with the wrench.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
3. Loosen the nuts with the wrench.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
4. Put the jack in place.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
5. Jack up the car.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
6. Remove the nuts from the wheel.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
7. Remove the flat tire.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
8. Put the spare tire on.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
9. Replace the lugs and tighten them until you can't turn them by hand.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
10. Lower the car and finish tightening the nuts.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
11. Remove the jack and replace the hub cap.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
12. Put the flat tire, the wrench, and the jack back in the trunk.
|

|
|

# BEFORE OR AFTER?
|
|
|
|
Look at the 12 pictures on pp. 89-90 again. One student will ask a question with before or after. Another will answer the question.
|

|
|
EXAMPLES: What do you do before you replace the hub cap?
|

You tighten the lugs.

|
|
|
What do you do after you lower the car?

|
You finish tightening the lugs.
|

|
# THREE CAN DO IT FASTER.

Steve, Ted and John went for a drive. The car started pulling to the right side. Ted stopped the car. He got out and checked. They had a flat tire!

"That's okay", he thought. "The three of us can change the tire in no time."
|
|
|
|
Now look at the pictures on page 92, and you tell the story.

2. There are some rules for polite introductions. In the United States most people shake hands when they meet others for the first time. Women don't always shake hands with other women. When they are sitting, men usually stand up for introductions. Women don't have to stand, but most women do stand when they meet older people or people of higher rank. Remember these rules when you make introductions.
