The <u>nurse</u> at the school took everyones <u>temperature</u>. She gave the students thermometers and told them to hold the thermometers under their tongues for a few minutes. Then she took the thermometers and looked at them. Marias thermometer said 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37 degrees Celsius. That temperature is all right. Someone with a temperature higher than 98.6 has a <u>fever</u>.

# AUDIO SCRIPT
## Lesson 1A
### AUDIO TRACK 1
(1) Hello. Open your Language Laboratory Activities booklet to Lesson 1A. (pause 6 sec)
(2) Look at Figure 1. Listen to the underlined words in the dialog. Then repeat them. (pause for repetition)

(3) Now listen to the dialog. Don't repeat it. Just listen.
(voices 1, 2, and 5, female; voices 3, 4, and 6, male)

(5) Now go to Figure 2. Look at the pictures and listen to the sentences. Write the number of the sentence under the correct picture. Number 1 is an example.
Number 1: Allen has a stomachache. (pause 6 sec) The answer is <u>c</u>. Write the number 1 below that picture.
Number 2: Sally has a headache. (pause 6 sec)
Number 3: Maria has a backache. (pause 5 sec)
Number 4: Steve has a pain in his chest. (pause 4 sec)
Number 5: David has an earache. (pause 3 sec)
(6) Look at the pictures and check your answers. (pause 2 sec after each sentence)
Picture a is 2. (pause 2 sec)
Picture b is 5.
Picture c is 1.
Picture d is 3.
Picture e is 4.
(7) Look at the pictures again and answer the questions. (pause 3 sec after each question)
Do all of the students have the same problem? (pause 3 sec)
Repeat: No, they have different problems. (pause for repetition)
Look at picture a. What's the matter with Sally?
Repeat: She has a headache.
Look at picture b. What's wrong with David?
Repeat: David has an earache.
Look at picture c. What's the matter with Allen?
Repeat: He has a stomachache.
Look at picture d. What is Maria's problem?

(8) Please look at Figure 3. Look at the paragraph. Listen to the underlined words and repeat them. (pause for repetition)

(9) Now look at the paragraph and listen. Don't repeat.
The nurse at the school took everyone's temperature. She gave the students thermometers and told them to hold the thermometers under their tongues for a few minutes. Then she took the thermometers and looked at them. Maria's thermometer said 98 point 6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37 degrees Celsius. That temperature is all right. Someone with a temperature higher than 98 point 6 has a <u>fever</u>.
(10) Look at Maria's thermometer. What is her temperature?
(pause 2 sec) It's ninety-eight point six. Does she have a fever?
(pause 2 sec) No, she doesn't. Repeat: Maria doesn't have a fever.
(11) Now listen and look at the other thermometers. When you hear a student's temperature, write it on his or her thermometer.
When the nurse looked at the other thermometers, this is what she learned: (pause 6 sec after each sentence)
Steve had a temperature of a hundred degrees. (pause 6 sec)
Allen's temperature was ninety-eight point two degrees.
Sally's temperature was ninety-nine point five.
David had a temperature of one hundred and three degrees.
(12) Listen again and check the temperatures. (pause 3 sec after each sentence)
Steve had a temperature of a hundred degrees. (pause 3 sec)
Allen's temperature was ninety-eight point two degrees.
Sally's temperature was ninety-nine point five.
David had a temperature of one hundred and three degrees.

(13) Which students had fevers? Put a check beside their names. (pause 10 sec) Three students had fevers. They were Steve, Sally, and David. Now look at the thermometers and answer these questions. (pause 5 sec after each question)
Whose fever was the highest? (pause 5 sec)
Repeat: David's fever was the highest.
Who had the lowest temperature?
Repeat: Allen had the lowest temperature.
What was the highest temperature?
Repeat: The highest temperature was one hundred and three.
What was Steve's temperature?
Repeat: Steve's temperature was one hundred degrees.
What was Sally's temperature?
Repeat: Sally's temperature was ninety-nine point five.

(14) Now look at Figure 4. Look at the pictures and repeat the words under the pictures. (pause for repetition)

(15) Look at the sentences under the pictures. Repeat the words and sentences. (pause for repetition)

Sally has a bad cold.

(16) Go to Figure 5 now. Listen to the dialog. Don't repeat.
(2 female voices. Please add the sound effects of a cold as indicated)
voice 1: (sneeze) Excuse me. I can't stop sneezing.
voice 2: What's the matter? Did you catch a cold?
voice 1: I have all the symptoms of one. (cough, cough)
voice 2: That's a bad cough. Do you have a fever?
voice 1: Yes, and a runny nose, too. (sniff)
voice 2: Did you make a doctor's appointment?
voice 1: I don't think I need to see the doctor.
voice 2: Why not?
voice 1: I know what she'll tell me: Stay in bed.
voice 2: Yes. (as if smiling) And eat a lot of chicken soup.
(17) Listen to the dialog again. This time write the missing words in the blanks. (pause 6 sec after sentences with underlined words)
voice 1: (sneeze) Excuse me. I can't stop <u>sneezing</u>. (pause 6 sec)
voice 2: What's the matter? Did you <u>catch</u> a <u>cold</u>?
voice 1: I have all the <u>symptoms</u> of one. (cough, cough)
voice 2: That's a bad <u>cough</u>. Do you have a <u>fever</u>?

(19) Go to Figure 6. Read the questions. (pause 20 sec) Now listen to a conversation.
(two male voices)
voice 1: Hey, David. Why weren't you in math class this morning?
voice 2: I was in the nurse's office.
voice 1: What was wrong?
voice 2: I was sick.
voice 1: That's too bad. The math test was easy.
voice 2: It was? I thought it was going to be hard.
voice 1: I guess a lot of other people thought the same thing. Half of the class wasn't there.
voice 2: Was Mr. Wilson angry?
voice 1: No, but he did say that the test tomorrow will be more difficult.
voice 2: Another test tomorrow? I feel sick again.
(20) Listen to the conversation again, then answer the questions. Listen first.
voice 1: Hey, David. Why weren't you in math class this morning?
voice 2: I was in the nurse's office.
voice 1: What was wrong?
voice 2: I was sick.
voice 1: That's too bad. The math test was easy.
voice 2: It was? I thought it was going to be hard.
voice 1: I guess a lot of other people thought the same thing. Half of the class wasn't there.

voice 1: No, but he did say that the test tomorrow will be more difficult.
voice 2: Another test tomorrow? I feel sick again.
(21) Now answer the questions and repeat the correct answers. (pause 4 sec after each question)

Repeat: Mr. Wilson is a teacher.
Number 2: How was the math test this morning? (pause 4 sec)
Repeat: It was easy.
Number 3: Where was David this morning? (pause 4 sec)

When it's time for his <u>annual</u> visit to the doctor, Henry calls Dr. Armstrong's office. The secretary always gives him an appointment <u>sometime</u> in June. The doctor checks Henry carefully <u>they</u>. When Dr. Armstrong finds something wrong in the <u>regular</u> exam, he asks Henry to <u>come in</u> for another examination.
